Take an informative and magical tour of Hawai‘i's special places in this classic, best selling children's book. Very educational and enjoyable reading.
This is a colorful and informative book about Hawaii. Peter Panini (an odd ikaika helmet-wearing character) and his dog, Punahele, take you on a journey through the Hawaiian islands. I like that he shows the little-known Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and the underwater volcano Lo'ihi that is creating a new island as well as the eight primary ones that most people know about.
This short picture book would be a fantastic resource for a classroom. The information provided within its vivid colors and amusing text would be great for students to learn about the Hawaiian Islands. I remember this was the book that taught me everything about the islands so I would love for my students to have that same experience. I would have this book as a part of my collection, though I wouldn’t use it for any serious lessons. Most likely these types of books won’t be a part of curriculum, so perhaps I would take a day and teach about the islands with this book. Bringing in supplementary resources or even cultural myths could help make the lesson more legitimate, although in principle, this is for entertainment. Students deserve to learn about culture in a fun and engaging way. I believe this would be the perfect solution to help students learn a little more about our neighboring islands.
