I like the edginess of "Dance Night," the first novel in the book. That and the short stories affirm the Dawn Powell revival of the late 1990s that brought her work out of oblivion. That said, I didn't read the 2nd novel in this collection, "Turn, Magic Wheel" - too much too soon, which suggests that novels are best left freestanding, when possible.
