Worn down by several years of marriage, Barbara feels she has lost all the vitality of her youth. But her old friend Simon is not prepared to let Barbara lose sight of the woman she really is - the woman he has always loved. He reawakens Barbara's passion and fighting spirit - but at what cost?
A whimsical and romantic tale set in Norfolk in 1920, Barbara Bosgrove and her friends Penny and Simon are having a fantastic day together when she meets George Kennett. He is determined to have her at any cost even if it means coercion, he is ambitious and tough and believe his hard work will get him everywhere in life, in work, in status and even in Barbara's bed. When Barbara after seeing her father with a new lady in a compromising position succumbs to George's attentions in desperation to escape the "new" stepmother at home George feels his life is fulfilled but Barbara feels hers has ended as she is trapped in a loveless and philandering marriage and things get even more complicated when she becomes pregnant as she feels now with the burden of a family at this time, there are no options for her and nowhere to go to escape but then is that really true? Simon can offer her an escape of sorts, he has always loved her and will genuinely do anything to have her in his life, even if that means affairs, brief meetings he will put up with it for love, unlike the cloying, domineering love of George. But after she becomes pregnant until the baby's birth she is unsure of who the father is and only time will tell who the child will take after. Will she be able to keep her secret and keep living with George's promiscuities, extra marital affairs and keep quiet about his wheeling dealing business interests or will the result of her tryst with Simon be the end of her marriage and life as she knows it? Plot twists at every turn make this an exciting novel and believable characters lend it an air of realism and with whom the reader can empathise with. Thoroughly enjoyed this and well worth reading.
Set in the 1920s, this book is about Barbara, a young girl whose friend's brother is rather keen on her.. until the slightly older George steps into the scene. George is determined to make Barbara his wife, and he always gets what he wants. Unfortunately, some of his method are far from honest.
The story is about Barbara's growing up and discovering who she really is, what she wants of life, and where she can best deploy her talents. Surprises from the past are uncovered, although by the time they were explained I had guessed what was coming. Pleasant light reading.
