I was prepared for something even more sad (coming of age story set in the 1950's south) so it was a relief not to be depressing. Yet, it still dealt with difficult issues, and I appreciated that too.
I think it's very well written. I loved the details of the scene. The sounds, smells, sights, feeling, etc. Lovely. Especially the part in Alabama.
And there was just some very good, thought-provoking treatment of families, being new, being home schooled, being different than the people in your community, race, religion, etc. Recommend it!
