I'm also one of the founders, editors and contributors to the digital sci-fi, fantasy and horror short fiction publication Spectra Magazine (http://spectramagazine.com).
I've placed film scripts in the finals of three worldwide screen writing competitions, and I'm a member of the Sci-fi & Fantasy Writers of America (despite being terminally English).
Songbirds: Interesting concept A Distant Sound of Hammers: Gory, disturbing, and compelling. This story will stay with me. When the Arizona Moon Meets the Arizona Sun: I want more of this world! The Federal Bureau of Magic sounds fascinating. Wolf Being: Evocative and sad, with a hopeful ending.
I agree - the future of short fiction is here. Of course, I would agree, given that I'm one of Spectra Magazine's editors, but I still mean it :-)
The short fiction we curated for the first six month publishing run has completely renewed my enthusiasm for, and faith in, short fiction. Reading all our submissions has me so excited about the sci-fi, fantasy and horror genres, and short story writing, that I just can't stop writing.
As the owner of Spectra Magazine, this review is naturally biased, but I did want to say how much we appreciated so many authors delivering such outstanding work during our submissions period. It was immensely difficult choosing the content for Issue 1, but we're incredibly proud of how it turned out - and it's all thanks to our authors.
A great magazine that died a too-early death, the first issue was fabulous, with quality stories from all the players. I'll be honest, my story, "A Distant Sound of Hammers" was good (for what that's worth coming from the writer), but it probably wasn't as good as the others. Some amazing stories by my TOC-mates make this a book worth picking up.
