Saint Clare: Beyond the Legend

Rate this book
Foreword by Murray Bodo, O.F.M

Medieval scholar Marco Bartoli, as translated by Clare scholar Sister Frances Teresa Downing, reconstructs the charismatic personality of Clare of Assisi, a great medieval figure whose voice has been heard through the ages. Bartoli explores what has been said about Clare and what has not been said, between evidence and interpretation, between silence and memory, using the most important source for knowing Clare, the Legenda sanctae Clarae virginis (The Legend of Saint Clare the Virgin), written by order of the pope on the occasion of Clare's canonization.

The information in this book is good. The reason I gave it a low rating is that it does not flow very well. The same incidents are repeated in various chapters and there seems to be little connecting the chapters into a single narrative. It also lacks a conclusion that would draw it all together. Unfortunate for an informative book on the life of St. Clare b

Great Read

An outstanding book that goes behind most of the legends and legend stories of Saint Claire and Saint Francis of Assisi. It takes stories from original sources, in particular the documents provided to Rome for the canonization of Saint Claire.

So, this portrays a woman in the overall strength, leader ship, caring, and daring. Not an overly meek lady who follows St Francis everywhere.

The book isn't long, but I found it hard going. I'm taking an online class, The Franciscan Way, and this book was one that was recommended. Maybe I found it hard because I'm a Protestant and have little to no knowledge of the saints. Still, Saint Clare is an inspiration.

Brilliant.
Helped me to really understand the situation around the middle ages, and what hpapened with Clare and also introduced a new source to the mix that was recently discovered that it appears noone else has used yet.
Exciting.
I'm still reading it.

I was looking for a book on the life of St Clare. This is more of an academic study of various themes on her life. The book was fine, but not exactly what I was looking for.

The best book about St Clare and her uncompromising insistence on poverty despite the misunderstanding of many regarding her charism. An AMAZING woman though living out her gospel poverty is a special challenge for those called to live as POOR CLARES!
