Very interesting work. The premise of this volume is simple: Publish newspaper articles from "The New York Times" depicting the progress of the Civil War from 1861-1865. The book contains about 600 newspaper articles; there is also a CD that has many thousands of additional articles. The volume also includes items from the 1850s that set the context for the Civil War (such as stories about slavery) as well as the years after the Civil War (covering Reconstruction). For those interested in primar ...more

Just received this book and it's exactly what I was hoping it would be. There's an extensive compilation of articles chronicling events as they were witnessed by reporters on or near the front lines. At i ...more

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a kind of back-door take on the Civil War. It has most of the articles about the war, as it happened, from the New York Times. I found particularly interesting the descriptions by embedded reporters. There was definitely a lack of impartiality, but I found some of the qualities such as sarcasm entertaining. It is a very large book, with very tiny print, so it takes a while to read, but it's worth it. As a bonus, there is a CD included which ...more
