The 13-year-old and I read this one to complement an online neuroscience class he's taking this semester. This text engages young readers with real-life stories of traumatic brain injuries and full-color photography and diagrams of the brain and nervous system. 3.5 stars.
I did not care for the way this book was laid out. It started with a story about Candace, which continued for several pages, but was interspersed with general information and other stories about individuals so that you either had to stop reading about Candace and read about other stuff for a couple of pages, or skip the other stuff to finish reading about Candace and then go back to read the other pages. Either way, it's frustrating.
As far as the material goes, it had some nice basic information about brain injuries and good images to go with it. Some of the pictures may be a bit graphic - for example, there is one of an intracranial pressure monitor being inserted through the skull.
Overall, the information there is good. I just really did not like the layout.
