Enjoyed this mystery featuring a rich family trapped under one roof at the mercy of a nasty matriarch and her purse strings. The story begins with an attempted poisoning of a blind and deaf adult child of the (mad) Hatter family. As mystery readers know- nothing sets up a murder like hate and a group of people unable to make ends meet on their own.

Classic 'consulting detective' murder mystery: in 2012, #2 on the Tozai Mystery Best 100 list. Though the story is marred by several serious issues (whodunnit seemed fairly obvious from the start, the main character's deafness is poorly handled, and there's some serious misogyny directed at the victim as folks leap to a conclusion about how something unfortunate originated), there's a plot element I enjoyed so much that I have to rate it highly. 추리소설의 걸작이라는 Y의 비극을 드디어 읽었다. 정통추리소설을 많이 읽어보지 않은지라 그냥 일반소설이라고 생각하고 읽다보니 계속해서 주어지는 상황설명과 인물 설명에 처음에는 집중이 잘 안되기도 했지만 전체적으로 깔끔하고 생각치 못한 반전으로 끝나게 되는 부분에 이르자 아..무려 80년전에 이런 소설이 나온거였구나..이래서 이 작품을 추리소설의 걸작이라고 하는 거구나..라는 인식을 하게 되었다. 범인을 맞추려고 하기 보다는 내용을 그대로 따라갔기 때문에 마지막에 범인에 대해 덤덤히 설명하는 드루리레인의 모습에서 더 큰 카타르시스를 느낄 수 있었던 것 같다. 장르적 소설로 튼튼하고 좋았지만..확실히 80년전 소설이라 그런지 빨아들이는 흡인력은 조금 부족하지 않았나 싶긴 하다. 그리고 여기서 나오는 범인에 대한 설정이 거의 최초라고 하는데..그 후에 무수히 많은 다른 작품들에서 이 소설의 클리셰를 접하게 된 나로서는 감회가 새롭기도 했다.
