In 1931, the biggest major league baseball stars were Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. They both played for the New York Yankees. Seventeen-year-old Jackie Mitchell cant believe it when she learns the team is coming to her hometown for an exhibition game. Shes a pitcher on her team, the Lookouts, and shell get the chance to go head-to-head with the Yankee sluggers. Can she strike them out?

History’s Kid Heroes graphic novels from Lerner Publishing provide elementary readers with a look at a wide array of important figures from the distant and not so far away past. This installment covers a lesser known but important figure in sports, Jackie Mitchell.
The graphic novel begins with a traditional text introduction establishing the presence of women participating alongside men in the game of baseball since the 1890s. Teenager Jackie Mitchell played on a women’s baseball team and frequently was called upon to play in exhibition games featuring minor league and professional baseball teams. On April 2, 1931, she was part of one of these games and pitched against Yankees Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, striking out both male heavy-hitters. Back matter does allude to possible controversy surrounding this game, but the facts remain, women can do mighty things in positions generally held by men, including baseball. Graphic panels are excellent, the brief dialogue covers the main events well, and the fairly short prose sections fill in some gaps nicely.
Text and graphic panels are free of profanity, violence and sexual content. Target ages are likely grades 2-4 but could easily be used with older students who either struggle to read or are reluctant to crack a cover of any book.
