The title is misleading. It's not really a book about relationships and what was before. The question is only a pretense for Mosebach to spin his yarn. The protagonist remains in the background. He only exists in his observations, not in his actions. He is removed, more a camera than an actor. The real matter are the observations on characters, places. Mosebach even is so pretentious to dedicate a long description to a tree. Another review even considers this to be the highlight of the book. To ...more

On the surface, a tale of a network of privileged, contemporary Germans as they go though a few months in their interconnected lives. Bits can be read at a deeper level; I'll leave that to the literary folks to handle. While reading, I kept waiting for something to happen. And eventually something did, actually "somethings," plural. None of these were all that earth shattering. The thing is that this book is just beautifully written. Beautifully.

Very artistic German romantic novel with much symbolism and layers of meaning. I enjoyed reading a book of this type but much of the meaning was beyond me.

The German Academy for Language and Literature praised him for "combining stylistic splendour with original storytelling that demonstrates a humorous awareness of history."

Among his works translated into English is The Heresy of Formlessness, a collect
