Fear Street #23

Double Date

Rate this book
No girl in her right mind would say no to a date with Bobby Newkirk. Not with those great looks, that easy charm, and the awesome way he plays the guitar. Of course, some people think he's just a bit conceited. But when it comes to breaking hearts, that hasn't slowed Bobby down one bit.

At least, not until the beautiful Wade twins move to Shadyside. And Bobby brags to his friends that they'll both fall for him.

And they do. Too bad for Bobby the twins never learned to share. One of them is jealous, murderously jealous. Is it quiet, shy Bree? Or bold, sexy Samantha? Bobby had better figure it out...or his double fun will turn to double terror.

Fazit:
Wieder eine spannende Geschichte von dem Autor. Ich kann es nur weiterempfehlen.

When I first read the Fear Street Series as a young child, I thought they were spooky books. I eagerly anticipated author R.L. Stine's next novel because all the strange things that occurred on Fear Street were connected in each succeeding book. This title was no exception.

My first two readings of Double Date were enjoyable ones. I was around eleven years old the first time I read it and probably around fourteen the second time. So, when I saw the book on sale for $0.25 at the Friends of the Library Sale in Eureka, CA, I knew I couldn't pass up this opportunity to revisit a childhood favorite.

The story is about a high school boy named Bobby Newkirk. He's obsessed with his good looks and believes he's God's gift to women. All the girls want him, and once he's dated them for a little while, he discards them like used tissues. That is until he meets his biggest challenge: the Wade twins. Samantha and Bree are as different as night and day, and Bobby's determined to make himself a high school legend at Shadyside High. Who else has the animal magnetism and the self-confidence to date twins at the same time? No one but "Bobby the man."

Of course Bobby is not someone the reader should admire. His conceitedness and chauvinistic-machismo attitude is revealed in the first page. He's a high school "player." As an adult, it was a little difficult to stomach the entire novel knowing what I do about women's rights and feminism. Plus, Bobby's character is really despicable, an utter creep. Of course, I don't think middle school/pre-teen readers will be worried about the social and cultural implications of the main character in Double Date. After all, it's a classic horror piece, and R.L. Stine creates a story that teaches a valuable lesson about how women should and shouldn't be treated in his traditional, twisted manner.

The setting of the novel is Shadyside High, the Fear Street High School. Unfortunately, the location is not highlighted enough when you consider the rich and vivid world that R.L. Stine has developed. Mainly, side characters just mention that strange things happen because they live on Fear Street, as if that explains the horrors that occur.

As previously stated, the main character is Bobby and the plot centers on his love triangle with Samantha and Bree Wade, twins that moved to Fear Street a year ago. Other minor characters include Bobby's band players, Arnie and Paul. The book is also littered with a variety of cheerleaders and other women that Bobby has dated. The boy really leaves a string of jaded women with broken hearts behind him.

There's not a lot of character development, but what do you expect from a book that's 150 pages? What it lacks in development is made up by Stine's craftiness at creating a delectable horror novel for children and young adults. There are no literary elements used, and there is not a lot of depth to the story. However, Stine does teach children a valuable lesson about how actions have consequences. In this case, it's treat others the way you want to be treated...or else...

The nice thing about Double Date, and really all of R.L. Stine's writings, is that they are age approach despite their subject matter. In this case, I would say readers as young as ten or eleven would enjoy Double Date. There are no sex scenes, and the furthest physical contact that "Bobby the man" has with any of the girls that he dates is kissing. There is no foul language, and although it's spooky, there are no real dangerous or violent scenes until the very end, and even that is almost comical, especially from an adult's perspective. Considering some of the teen horror novels that are out there, R.L. Stine is really "old school" and gets a PG rating from me. If you are still a concerned parent, I would recommend reading it for yourself before giving it to your child. Teenagers, though, should be able to handle the content of this novel easily enough.

As an adult reader, the novel is boring. It can't compare to literary horror geniuses like Stephen King or Dean Koontz. The writing is pedantic and predictable. As a younger reader, I remember it being suspenseful, thrilling, and mysterious. Not anymore. Perhaps part of my disappointment was because I already knew the ending, or perhaps it was because I've developed intellectually as a reader. Regardless, the age of the reader will affect the enjoyment of Double Date.

Overall, Double Date is a quick read that shouldn't take most readers longer than a day to finish. It's a good introduction to the horror genre for young people, but it isn't the best Fear Street novel by R.L. Stine. Still, it was a nice visit down memory lane reading the book as an adult. It marks my third read, which was enough for me. In the future, I won't be going on a fourth date.

This was a quick and fun read for Valentine's Day.

We follow Bobby, a guy that definitely loves himself a little bit too much. He is always going from girl to girl and never takes their feelings into consideration.

When he hears that a set of twins is moving to Shadyside, he brags to his friends that he will be able to date both girls because who can resist him….yikes. You will end up hating his guts but that is how it was intended.

As he gets to know the twins, he will realize that they are keeping a very dark secret.

I remember reading this book while I was in school.

Glad the girls were able to get their revenge against Bobby. Wonder if Bree and Samantha alternated between playing the third sister.

Bobby is the male Reva, and that's what makes his comeuppance so much fun. Because, mild spoiler, unlike Reva, Bobby pays for his indiscretions.

A fun Fear Street with a confusing cast of interchanging multiple girls, cannibal ants, and a jerk of a lead character who thinks he's above it all but quickly finds out, he's really not.

The main character in this book deserves a swift kick to the family jewels and I hated everything about this book except the ending.

When rich, good-looking serial dater, Bobby Newkirk sets his sights on the Wade twins, he jokes about what it would be like to date them both at the same time, without them finding out about the other. His two best friends tease him, saying not even he could pull that off. Well, Bobby certainly isn't afraid of that challenge, boasting it's "no problem."
He asks both Bree and Samantha out the same day, and they both say yes. However, it's not all it's cracked up to be. Bree is quiet and intense, and is too needy. Samantha is way too wild and crazy - even for Bobby. Yet despite his reservations, they're just so hot he can't bring himself to dump them.
That's when bad things start happening to him. His tires are slashed, he gets shocked by a cut wire, he finds a threatening note and a gross fake dead animal in his locker. Not to mention he can't keep track of which girl is which - and it's making him feel crazy. On top of that, Samantha keeps asking Bobby to break up with Bree; she wants him all for herself.
Soon, more comes to light about the sisters and Bobby is getting conflicting stories from all sides; he has no idea what to believe and he's going nuts trying to figure out the truth. Which he better do soon - before it's too late.

This is what I would have to say the perfect revenge story I have read in a long time.

You have the popular guy who is constantly dating one girl after another. He has pretty much dated every single solitary girl in the entire school in fact. Everyone but a set of twins. Without knowing that they are very close sisters or not he decides to ask both of them out separately.
He finds himself in a lot of trouble to the point he believes someone is trying to kill him.
Ultimately he gets what he deserves in the end.

I’ve never read about a character that was more conceited and full of himself than Bobby. All the mentions of it not being fair to deprive the ladies at school of ‘Bobby the Man’ lowkey made me want to puke in my mouth. He thought that literally every girl he met was head over heels for him. There were some moments where a girl clearly hated Bobby and he’d just walk off, smugly laughing about how so-and-so desperately wanted him back. I just couldn’t with this guy because it was so over-the-top.

The plot itself was interesting. I had a hunch from the beginning about what was going on, but towards the latter parts of the book it became super confusing trying to make sense of . Also, the ending did leave me with mixed feelings. On one hand, . It all just seemed a little anti-climactic compared to what I was expecting going in.

So I've read plenty of old Fear Street books as a kid, Double Date was one I originally skipped due to the premise not to my interest. The main plot is of how Bobby gets a chance to date twin sisters, Samantha and Bree. The real surprise was that one of them is jealous of the other and they convinced Bobby to take part in killing the other. The audiobook is decent and Frank Muller is a great narrator for the story, but I have two big issues with the story. One was the real unlikability of Bobby's character, it's one thing to have a flawed character, but Bobby was one waiting to be killed. The second was that the pacing appeared to be slower than usual and no gore really is very unfamiliar to a Fear Street book.

Justice and I listened to this while driving up and down the North Shore! It made me chuckle quite a bit. Bobby is the best horrible main character I’ve seen in a book, and I trusted that the author made him horrible intentionally. He was very consistent, albeit with a repetitive internal monologue. I did not see the resolution to the mystery coming, so it was fun to see it unfold. I felt gaslit right along with Bobby the Man 😌

This turns into a schizo shadyside adventure worthy of the Fear Street name. Fortunately Bobbie as the main character who runs into a mess is a jerkwad who deserves the inconvenience, although I was shocked at a scene when the author 'monkeyed around' too far for this age group and his usual stuff. I listened to this from an Audible sitewide sale curious how the fan popular Frank Muller would do - he narrates this well and takes the story as seriously as he would any adult novel.

The thing is, I KNEW how this was going to end, but R.L. had me second guessing myself three quarters of the way into the book anyway. 😅 An absurdly ridiculous installment of the series, but still a lot of fun.

Bobby Newkirk is blond, broad-shouldered and boorish. He may look like Mr. All-American but he is Mr. Arrogance who dumps and dates all the girls at Shadyside High like they are trends going out of style. Right now, he has cheerleader Ronnie eating out of one hand and fellow cheerleader Kimmy Bass eating out of the other. He once dumped a girl just because she spilled Coke in his car and when his friends pick up his scraps, Bobby kind of hopes to have them come running back to him.

Bobby is in a band with his friends Paul and Arnie and is the lead guitarist who loves his guitar as much as he loves himself but doesn't take it as seriously as Paul and he even thinks Arnie stinks on the drums and they constantly change their band name more than they practice...mainly because Bobby can't say no to going on a date with a girl just to string her on. One day, the Wade twins interrupt band practice looking for the music teacher and Bobby is taken with shy Bree and sexy Samantha.

They just moved to Shadyside and are the only girls Bobby hasn't dated yet but he bets Paul and Arnie he can date both girls at the same time. In no time, Bobby is going out with both girls and finds that Bree is shy at first but she begins to fall for Bobby very easily. Samantha on the other hand is not shy but she may just be a little too wild for Bobby to handle driving his car recklessly without a license and even getting Bobby to steal her a bracelet from the mall after she five-finger discounts some earrings on one of their earlier dates!

Things get heavier when Sam tells Bobby he needs to drop Bree saying that she isn't right when she gets hurt and that she wants more time with Bobby...guess the twins were never taught to share their toys! Besides the trouble with the twins, Bobby finds that his perfect existence is falling apart in a disturbing manner after the tires on his car are slashed and he almost gets electrocuted to death by his own guitar! There's a way to tell the twins apart but soon not even that can help Bobby discover which twin is doing this to him...or could it be someone else? Bobby's friend Arnie is dating one of his old flings Melanie...could she be jealous enough or hate Bobby so much to kill him?

So the story is pretty much like a crazy Lifetime movie in the beginning but it has some good points where there are some characters that could be the real culprit besides the twins. There are a few twists and turns but when you get to the end it is just the best! Now this may just be me being a female but you can't help but liking karma biting someone in the ass! True it may seem a little harsh but it's not evil or malicious and as long as no one gets hurt fatally...you just have to see it for yourself without me spoiling it (worth it!)

Character wise, the only two I can't stand are of course Bobby and Arnie. Not too much hate for Arnie he's just simply immature and annoying with his only good point being he seems to actually care for Melanie. Bobby Newkirk is the worst male character I have seen so far in a Fear Street book.
He is vain, egotistical, treats women like dirt, thinks everyone likes him and just like so many guys I went to high school with. His only good points are that he likes classic rock music (like back to 1950s Chuck Berry) and likes animals (he has a science experiment with two monkeys and treats them very humane).

My biggest reason for hating him is he makes fun of Melanie for being a little overweight and says that if she lost a few more pounds he might go back out with her! I am slightly chunky myself so I take offense to that (especially in high school and college) but maybe it's his fault she is. Bobby went out with her for three months before she found out he was going behind her back with other girls and broke up with him crying so obviously a year ago she was just fine to go out with.

I for one know what it's like to be heartbroken and drowning my sorrows in tubs of ice cream and candy bars so maybe that's what happened and Arnie seems to like her the way she is. I think Bobby gives her crap for her weight just because she won't go back to him because he mentions that she does still look good...I still don't/will never understand boys/men!

There was a scene where you thought someone was actually deranged enough to cut off the head of one of Bobby's monkeys (named Wayne and Garth...so 90s!) and leave it in his locker! Don't worry it was real, gross smelling blood but a plastic, realistic monkey head but effective enough that Bobby tossed his cookies! Now I don't particularly like Bobby but that was messed up just like electrocuting him! Also, I do not like monkeys but I would never hurt one especially by decapitation...sick!

Still worth its five star rating and a Fear Street book worth reading if you haven't already.
