Graciela Iturbide

Graciela Iturbide (b.1942) is one of Latin America's foremost photographic artists. Her images are poetic documents that have as their themes rite and ceremony, the interaction of nature and culture, and the tensions between tradition, modernity and identity. She has won, among other major accolades, the W. Eugene Smith Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship for her work. "A kamera ürügy arra, hogy megtapasztaljam az emberek életét, ünnepeik ritmusát és egyszerűségét, egyszóval, hogy felfedezzem a hazámat. Volt nekem is mit felfedeznem, művészete nagyon nyers, mégis tele van szelídséggel. A mesterét, < a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... Álvarez Bravo-t, talán meg is haladta, igaz Iturbide-nek nincsenek stílusjegyei (a stílustalanságot stílusosan csomagolja), ellentétben Bravo-val.
Sokat lehet olvasni Maexikóról, mégis azt mondom, hogy a mexikói fotósok többet mutatnak meg pár felvételen az országból, mint a szakkönyvek...

I lived with this photographer in an artist colony. She radiated wisdom and quiet humor. She truly had a grace about her. I wish I had talked to her more.

Her photos are wonderful, otherworldly, at times foreboding. The descriptions and analysis opposite each image are often hugely informative and fascinating in their own right. However, they occasionally struck me as overly intellectual and pompous. Still, that can't take away from this beautiful and bizarre collection.
