Warning: this book was published in 2006, well before the Arab Spring, and is still stuck in the middle of Iraq War. Even though, it's still super-informative with lots of pictures. I really liked the way the book was set up, starting out with two pages dedicated to each Middle Eastern ethnicity and then jumping into history. Turkey and Afghanistan are included in the book, but not Pakistan, a choice which seemed baffling to me, since Pakistan has tons of Middle Easternly conflicts going on. Ove ...more

This is the greatest book for clearly and simply defining each of the cultures, countries, histories, and religions that contribute to the Middle East conflicts. I would call it Middle East for Dummies: it is so easy to read and gives you an a quick overview. If you know little about what is going on in the Middle East and would like to know more... this is the perfect beginners' book and will leave you wanting to learn more!

A lot of information but the sensationalistic tone was off putting and made the content vaguely suspect. I'm not sure if this is just because of the year it was published, nearly a decade ago now, or common for TIME Inc books.

It's pretty brief, but it is still fun to flip through here & there.
