Some of the top 10 highlights are the beautiful Haghia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Cemberlitas Turkish Baths built in 1584, and the colorful Grand Bazaar. Pinching a few pennies? There’s a section on Istanbul for Free, too! Travelers will also enjoy the section highlighting a few of the local culinary delights, such as manti stuffed with delectable minced lamb, lokum, elastic ice cream, coban salatasi and gozleme pancakes with savory stuffing.
Not to be missed are the impressive Ottoman fortress of Yedikule Castle, the ancient Theodossian Walls, the Baroque Fatih Mosque, and the impressive Aqueduct of Valens, which brought precious water into the Palace from the Belgrade Forest. If one can coincide one’s vacation with one of the festivals, such as the Tulip Festival, Feast of Sacrifice, or the International Istanbul Film Festival, one is in for a real treat. This is a great book to purchase and bring along on your vacation.
Yes pretty good. Very helpful maps and advice and places etc. All in all very good. Slightly out of date though. Mentioned a few restaurants which no longer exist. Also I can't believe it failed to mention that the Pudding Shop is some famous point along the hippie trail!
Pretty straightforward guide book. Not a lot of detail as it was just one of these “top 10” type books, but it had handy info on the main sights, and I think pretty resourceful info for food and drink. It seemed a bit repetitive as it broke it down by top 10 sights of the whole city and then top sights for each district. Also a bit out of date, after only a few years (Büyükada no longer has the horse and carriage rides, and that was its main point within the book). It actually did convince us to add an extra mosque to our list, which I’m grateful for.
It was only a very short trip - our main priority was a wedding - so it was useful for the time we had. If we stayed any longer though, a more detailed book, with more elaborate history and background, would have been my preference. Maybe for the next trip.
