The characterization seemed off making most of the characters I had previously loved unlikable. I thought the whole thing was a weird twist to the story and it seemed like Webber was just trying to come up with another hit.

Oh, my. I read the libretto today after hearing the score. The story is ridiculous. The main characters are unlikeable. Plot contrivances abound. The music, even for Andrew Lloyd Webber, is forgettable, except perhaps for "Love Never Dies" but the scene where the song is sung is overwrought, bad melodrama. Since "Phantom of the Opera" is one of my guilty pleasures, I had high expectations for this and was very disappointed.

But why though?
The story is ridiculous, every character is ruined, the soundtrack is bad. It’s just bad, bad, bad.
