An exhaustive, and slightly exhausting, treatment of Alfred as a soldier and commander. Lacking a great deal of the necessary information, a lot of the book revolves around consideration of the location of battles, examining the various possibilities; all necessary stuff for the military historian but rather long on detail and dry on conclusion. The writing is serviceable but little more.
