Ernest George Schwiebert (1931–2005) was born in Chicago on June 5, 1931. An architect by profession, Ernest "Ernie" Schwiebert was a renowned angler and angling author. Schwiebert spent his childhood in the Midwest, attended high school at New Trier, north of Chicago, earned his bachelor's degree in architecture from Ohio State University, and earned two doctorates at Princeton in architecture and the history and philosophy of architecture.
Schweibert’s eloquent writing takes you around the globe, reliving his experiences from a lifetime of pursuing trout with flies. From tiny streams in Michigan and Pennsylvania, to the Firehole, Nepal, Norway, and Tierra del Fuego, you are immersed in the culture, friendships, and fishing the author experienced through his life long flyrod obsession. I enjoyed the nonlinear layout, which gave the feeling of an old man recollecting and telling stories from his youth. As exotic and intriguing as the stories are, there were times when the elitist fly fisherman stereotype shone through a little strong, however, overall I did enjoy the read and the idea of the fishing travel journal.
I actually spent time with Ernie on several occasions, he very much the real deal and a true gift to fly fishermen. His writing is superb, accurate, self effacing, and educational. We fished some of the same rivers and rubbed shoulders with that fly fishing clan of crazies so driven beyond words. Such is shared passion!
