'GRACE fights the lump RISING in her throat. For a MOMENT she is LOST in thought, remembering WHAT IT HAS TAKEN to get TO THIS POINT...'
Grace Cambridge is a young Black Christian with a new husband, old friends, and a shocking moral dilemma.
A proverbial 'cat fight' opens the story and draws you into a complex relational web. The book peels through layers of dysfunction between Grace and Trina and follows their individual, sometimes intertwining, lives to reveal how they find their way back to Christ and to each other. Grace is intelligent, determined, well-spoken yet vulnerable. You want her to be happy, you want her to succeed. Grace's Christianity isn't sugar-coated. Her faith is real and so is her life---riddled with plenty of twists, turns, and conflicts.
As Grace's relationship with God is challenged she questions her identity and is faced with a life-changing decision. She deals with everyday issues, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.
Grace's experiences are not much different than yours---how she handles them might be.
Ryan M. Phillips lives in Orlando, Florida. She is the communications specialist for The Ephraim Project, Inc. and the author of three previous novels: Saving Grace, After the Fall, and Fall from Grace. Ryan is currently working on her fifth novel while pursuing a Master of Arts degree in English.
Thanks Ryan Phillips. I read Saving Grace a while back. Why it took so long to read this...I can't answer (in particular since I had the book). Mike, Grace and Trina represents me, my friends, my relatives and others: when challenged and crippled we can sometimes look outward as opposed to looking upward. The power of repentance and forgiveness moves mountains. We know...we declare it..but because we are flesh...we have to go through to get to. Great read. Relatable. Pinpointing truth without being preachy....
This was part 2 of such a wonderful novel. The charactes lives continued and there was different added conflict. All of the issues were something I could relate to in some way. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a Christian Fiction book that's real and not overly dramatic or sappy.
Ryan does what I have not experienced before, I was so caught up with the characters of Grace and Trina that I wanted to read every page but became concerned that if I turn over another page I would be witnessing another frightful mistake or bad turn. I felt a warmth for these two best friends and a cringe facter that was caring as opposed to bad. This is a well written and a great book that I do highly recommend and know you will love, the characters are real so very believable which is part of why you will love them, and understand all that they do and question those around and at times want to shout at them shake them and all the reactions life brings out of us. Tread it then you will see what I mean.
I liked reading this book. I looked forward to reading it. It kept me up at night and almost made me miss devotion. It was worth the time and more. In our daily quest for life, we get so wrapped up in life we can see that we seem to push God aside and then the consequences are bizarre. I don't know if I can take a separation like Grace did or if I'd be bold enough like Trina to right wrongs. This book taught of faith when getting back up the steep heel of grace. Only Faith can pull you up and the author very well explained that in the lives of Grace and Trina.
I liked the storyline but the book itself was too wordy in an way that made it seem like the author was trying too hard to sound intelligent. I'm a very well read person but there were so many words that were unnecessary and many felt out of place. I spent half the time I was reading this novel looking up the extra words in the dictionary. I'm a but disappointed by it all.
A great 3.5 stars read but desperately needs an editor
This was a solid story with good character development. I couldn't stand Grace with her selfish ways that nearly destroyed her marriage and kill her baby. I would definitely read books by this author again.
Con: I was turned off by the editing issues...use of the wrong tense throughout was a major distraction.
My suggestion is that the author hire an editor for the next book.
I almost put this one down after the first chapter, so I am so glad I stuck with it. This was not a sappy Christian read or the formula written books that tell the same story. Not only was Grace's storyline unexpected, but Trina's character was cleverly written. This was my first Ryan Phillips' book and I'm looking forward to reading more.
A story that has lots of smaller stories within it. A couple gets married, they find that being married isn't the fairytale story but hard loving work. Their friends and family impact their lives as does an unexpected pregnancy.
Great grounded writing, founded on God. Good message. Not sure about the husband's actions, whether God would really guide someone that way. But spouses sure should be partners and equal in their faith in God.
I fell in love with this book when I started reading it! The characters flourished well and it did not have the ending I expected. It seems I read part 2 first but you can be sure I will be getting part 1 as well. Pick it up for a good pick me up!
Faith based novel. On Nook. Grace Cambridge is a young black christian with a new husband, old friends and a moral dilemma. Very interesting look at Christian life, walking with Christ or on your own?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My heart ached for the different characters- laughed and cried. The situations were so real. The scripture shared was on point and was food for thought and prayer along with reflecting on my life.
My first Ryan Phillips book and I look forward to reading others. It's a beautiful storyline and very relatable characters. I also loved the usage of words.
Looking forward to more recent stories by the author
Fall from Grace is amazing, I wasn’t disappointed! I’m do happy that Grace and Trina made up and Trina did the right by Becky! The story line is awesome! Great job author!!
I really enjoyed this novel. In May 2018, the book club that I host read Saving Grace and loved it. This May we will be discussing Fall From Grace, I am looking forward to it. In Fall from Grace, Ryan Phillips address such themes as relationships, love, forgiveness, through the characters that we were introduced to in Saving Grace and some new ones. This book bears lessons/reminders for any one seeking an intimate relationship with God. Through, Grace and Trina we see what happens to the relationship of best friends when one needs take precedence. Secrets and lies have the power to potentially killing a relationship and is definitely shown to wound a relationship. I think the single women will read this and dream of their own version of Mike. I know I did, LOL. Mike, Grace's husband is a man that loves God. He is a praying man. He started his own business. He is not without his flaws, but he is not afraid to apologize, to do some self-reflection. I am a fan of Ryan Phillips story telling and look forward to reading more novels by her. I look forward to meeting her as she has accepted an invitation to attend the book discussion.
I had mixed feelings about this book. I loved Saving Grace and was eager to read the sequel. At first I found the third person and present-tense (both in contrast to Saving Grace) distracting. After the first chapter or two, I lost interest and took a while to come back to it. Once I got into it, I did enjoy it overall. There are some plot elements that seemed a little far-fetched to me but overall not bad. Also, one thing that struck me (from a Christian standpoint) is that during Mike and Grace's marital troubles, Mike makes a drastic decision but there's no mention of him talking to a mentor, counselor, pastor, etc. I would think/hope that for as spiritually mature as he is supposed to be, he would seek wise counsel, and support for them both, in working through such serious problems. That's a minor point but just something that struck me (probably related to my own professional and church background :)); I wanted them to get more help to constructively work through that! Still though, once I got back into the book I read the whole thing in less than 3 days despite being in a busy season, so clearly I found it engaging!
I have just started reading the book. I liked the simple english that the author uses and the way he describes the feelings and scenes. - The cat fight describtion is good. As I read the book, Iam able to corelate how close two friends can become. and how difficult it is for them to be separated after wedding spl when one of the friend is like Trina.
