Comprehensive coverage of all the major sights in Beijing are included in this travel guide, as are detailed notes on hotels, restaurants and nightlife for various budgets. Practical information for the business and independent traveller are also featured throughout this text.
Mostly useless for being in Beijing. Two particularly egregious examples:
1. "Cash is King." No. Everyone pays with apps on their phones, which my bank wouldn't allow me to setup once I was already abroad. The first book in the phrasebook my Chinese friends copied out for me was "Do you take cash?" because usually the answer is "No." Only my hotel took a card.
2. Most bathrooms are Bring Your Own Toilet Paper and Soap, especially in the less posh areas. Toilet wise you can get anything from a Japanese import 100 function monstrosity to a squat toilet. It's a roulette I did not enjoy playing. Maybe the authors never piss while traveling?
As always, a great reference book by Lonely Planet. Useful for my trip to Beijing; however, authors could use more explanation on, so to say, the logistics of major cultural sites.
This Lonely Planet Guide has helped me during my travels in China, although I have to be honest: The Lonely Planet China already contains so much information on most cities that there is little to no need to use this Beijing edition, and it provides much more background to China as a country. The walks in this guide in my opinion skip some essential or eccentric sights, and a lot of buildings do not get the attention and wording they deserve, even in this in-depth city guide. If you are going to spend a long time (one week or more) in and around Beijing and are not seeing any other parts of China, this is the guide for you. Otherwise, just get the guide for China and use that. That said, Lonely Planet still provides the best guidebooks in the world.
This is the best book on Beijing traveling and sightseeing that I've encountered! With my husband arriving tomorrow, I feel prepared to show him the land of scribbly and all the fun things to see and do!
