While searching for the legendary lamp of Aladdin in Istanbul, the reader stumbles upon a secret stairwell and discovers a lamp, in an interactive adventure
Raymond A. Montgomery (born 1936 in Connecticut) was an author and progenitor of the classic Choose Your Own Adventure interactive children's book series, which ran from 1979 to 2003. Montgomery graduated from Williams College and went to graduate school at Yale University and New York University (NYU). He devoted his life to teaching and education.
In 2004, he co-founded the Chooseco publishing company alongside his wife, fellow author/publisher Shannon Gilligan, with the goal of reviving the CYOA series with new novels and reissued editions of the classics.
He continued to write and publish until his death in 2014.
This book has a long lead-in, but once you fully enter the story, it becomes exciting. The narrative more closely resembles traditional myths of an angry genie bent on harming its master, rather than the new "friendly genie" type stories, such as Disney's 1992 animated movie Aladdin. The Search for Aladdin's Lamp is a pretty good book, written by Choose Your Own Adventure's resident writer of fine historical fiction, Jay Leibold.
A very strong entry in the CYOA series. There are many interesting story threads, helped by some wonderful illustrations - perhaps among the best I’ve seen in a CYOA book, which is saying something.
