Women in Blue #6

A Mother's Vow

There is corruption in the Houston Police Department

And because she is chief of police, that makes it Catherine Tanner's problem. So when evidence turns up to indicate that her husband might not have died of natural causes, she has to go outside her own precinct to investigate.

Ex-cop Jeff Rowan is the most logical person for her to turn to. Unfortunately, Jeff isn't inclined to help Catherine, considering she was the one who fired him.

4 Stars! ~ It's been a year since Catherine's husband died while jogging; a heart attack induced by heat stroke. When Abby tells her of a homeless man who's claiming he seen her husband die, and it was not a heart attack, Catherine needs to find the truth. Jeff was fired by Catherine from the HPD for suspicion of racism. As police chief there was nothing Catherine could do to save his career. She's the last person Jeff expects to come to his PI office and he's astounded by the story she has to tell. There's corruption deep in the HPD and Catherine's husband was murdered because he stumbled onto something.

Catherine can't help her growing attraction to Jeff, but she feels like she's betraying her dead husband. Jeff knows he should resent Catherine for the loss of the career he loved, but he finds that all he wants is a chance to show her that they can be good together.

Women in Blue Multi-Author Series

These are the stories of six women who find each other at the Houston Police Academy. Catherine takes five young women under her instruction and teaches them not only the skills they will need to be good cops, but skills they will need to survive in the very male police department. The women become fast friends and stick up for each other, until Catherine is promoted to Police Chief and when one of them is accused of wrong doing in her partner's death on the job.

This series was very well put together. I did feel Risa's pain when her friends turned their back on her and wondered how the following authors would redeem the friendships. The subplot of corruption in the HPD was done very nicely and came to a very good conclusion. I particularly enjoyed Her Little Secret by Anna Adams. This is an intensely emotional story that pulls you in.
