After an eventful Christmas with her classmates, Sawako is super excited when Chizu and Ayane invite her to come with them to the shrine on New Year's Eve, which happens to be her birthday. But what she doesn't count on is her friends' birthday surprise--to get her to go alone with Kazehaya-kun!

Though Kimi ni Todoke is only her second series following many one-shot stories, it has already racked up accolades from various "Best Manga of the Year" lists. Winner of the 2008 Kodansha Manga Award for the shojo category, Kimi ni Todoke also placed fifth in the first-ever Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) contest in 2008.
The previous volume ended at Christmas so now the kids are on school break. Sawako's birthday is Dec 31 and she and her friends make plans to go to the shrine for New Year's.
Then we jump forward to the new semester and Valentine's Day. Sheesh, didn't you teens do anything interesting over break?!
Ughhhhh soooo good until the end! LOL! Have I mentioned I REALLY don't like Kurumi?? Why can't Sawako see the truth about her?!
*deep breath*
Anyway, SO many wonderful romantic vibes and feels in this one and SO many great steps to our romance FINALLY being a romance! Yes yes yes! Sawako was SO cute and it's great to see her making even more friends!
I simply love how beautiful this relationship is between Sawako and Kazehaya! They are so adorable and it is sooooo cute seeing them together!
Now if a certain rival would just stay out the picture...
This manga series follows a girl called Kuronuma and she has the looks that would be perfect for a ghost in a horror movie, but everyone has her misunderstood. Through her friendship with the popular boy in class, Kazehaya, her classmates start to realise that she's not this feared figure that she is thought to be. Kuronuma has just realised her feelings for Kazehaya and is learning to deal with them and still maintain the friendship that she has with Kazehaya.
This volume follows their New Year's Eve celebrations, which also happens to be Kuronuma's Birthday. This is the first time that I could imagine Kuronuma and Kazehaya as a couple. Before this, we just see them have crushes on each other, but this volume gives us a glimpse of what them as a couple could be like. Consequently, it makes this volume the cutest one that I've read so far. Plus it's literally a volume of all my favourite scenes of the manga. I can't wait to read more!
this one just gives me all the Christmas vibes and it’s not even been halloween yet 🥲 love sawakos family. love chizu & ayane setting her up on a “date” with kazehaya during New Years / her birthday. just so cute ;-; never over this series
THE WHOLE NEW YEAR EVE'S SCENE ALSJSLSBSKSJS THEY WERE SO FUCKING ADORABLE if sawako doesn't give kazehaya the fucking chocolates i swear imma commit a murder
Now that the preliminaries of establishing friendships and recognizing one's own feelings are done with, the author has moved ahead on the plot to get Sawako and Kazehaya together as a couple, and, as expected for these two shy fluffballs, it's moving slowly but cutely. They spend New Year's/Sawako's birthday together, after which we get a dramatic Valentine's Day episode in which the big question of chocolates is breached.
(For those of us from North America/Europe who don't know how this works, in Japan Valentine's Day is almost the exact opposite than what it is for us. Instead of the guys, it's the girls that give chocolates as a way to express their feelings. They can be love chocolates or obligatory chocolates, and the difference between the two is pretty self-explanatory. If the guy accepts the love chocolates, that's an indication that he returns the girl's feelings, and on White Day in March, he returns the favour via a present. Up to you which tradition you prefer, if any.)
Anyways, at the end we also get our first glimpse of Kent, who will become a great character to get the plot moving forward--next volume, please!
This series never disappoints for me. So sweet and funny - the awakening of young love at its best. And for fans of anime, the anime series really captures the written manga so beautifully. I can't wait to see the live action Japanese version of the series make its way to American shores with happy English subtitles...
This is one of my favourite volumes of the series - Sawako and Kazehaya meet at the temple on New Year's, due to some lovely machinations by Chizuru and Ayane. While they don't confess to each other, both manage to talk about the importance of the other in their life... which is why the last chapter is so brutal. Lots of lovely comedy with Chizu and Ayane, too ^^
It is so sweet when Sawako is having inner struggles when it comes to Kazehaya, such as calling him, giving him chocolates... Chizu and Ayane are wonderful friends helping her with the make-up so she can have a date with him.
I loved this volume, it is so cute! This one has Sawako's birthday and Valentine's Day.
Christmas and New Year's had things looking so promising...and then Valentine's Day comes along to screw everything up. So what happens to those amazing looking chocolates anyway?
