And such an important one too, because no matter what you do, or where you are in your life, the ability to think creatively is crucial for your survival and your success. Of all the Skinny On books I’ve read and reviewed, “The Skinny On Creativity” was the one I’ve been most skeptical about teaching creativity, thinking it may be a far too subjective subject for a self help book. But “The Skinny On Creativity” doesn’t teach creativity per se but its more along the lines of helping business people to recognize and use techniques that will enable them to approach and solve problems from different perspectives.
All the usual Skinny On tools are present the stick figure drawings (sadly, no Beth and Billy this time out), easy to remember and implement defining of the techniques to access your creativity, quotes from authorities on creativity to famous artists such as DaVinci, Picasso, and Van Gogh. The pithy distillation of information from experts on stimulating creativity, a bibliography for more in depth reading. Each Skinny On book is like a power point presentation that can be read in an hour or so and the techniques are easily and quickly incorporated into your life if you choose to follow the advice.
“The Skinny On Creativity” is another well crafted and thought out book in the Skinny On series containing many useful and helpful ideas at increasing ones creativity. It may not make you a Picasso or DaVinci but it will provide tools for tackling problems from another perspective.
You can’t force creativity but you can nurture and encourage it. Moreover, you won’t find creativity lurking in the status quo and the busyness of day to day tasks. No, if you truly want to be creative, you have to step out of the box. Then, you have to be willing to make a stand even when others think you’ve completely lost your marbles.
Many books about creativity sugar coat the process suggesting that “if you build it, they will come”. We all know that’s not very realistic. The Skinny on Creativity tells it straight- it will be hard and there will be work involved. Still, being truly alive has its own rewards.
Beyond the useful information, I found The Skinny on Creativity quite inspirational.
