Memes in this volume:

He said he wants to spread despair... is every part getting a Junko Enoshima from now on, or am I just hyperaware of this bc I'm (re)playing Danganronpa?

I'm really mixed on this. The chapter with Romeo was definitely a positive; it was a nice subversion of expectations. It was also nice to see Pucci giving Rykiel a sermon and converting him to the cult of Dio.

The Sky High battle itself was nothing to write home about, though. It kind of just came and went. Jolyne shouldn't have lit herself on fire until the very end. It was weird for her to just be casually engulfed in flames for like 3 chapters. Feels like that should have happened at the very end, rather than her being completely on fire, but not really taking damage.

I don't know how I feel about Dio's other kids being goobers. Giorno wasn't born into great circumstances, but he still came to embody the best of Dio and Jonathan. Why are these guys a bunch of goons, despite having similar backgrounds to Giorno? How come Giorno ended up surpassing both of his legendary fathers while Dio's other kids are weak-willed losers who need Pucci's sermons to give them a sense of purpose? Maybe there's a more charitable reading of this decision, but I can't come to find it. I feel like there's some missed potential with Dio's kids fighting Jotaro's daughter. You could have explored differing ideologies about inherited will or how they choose to honor their ancestors. Right now, having these guys be Dio's kids feels like a convenient reason for Pucci to have some minions outside of the prison. Hopefully this last one can make something of what should be an interesting setup.

At least the part at the very end where Rykiel and Hermes were talking about fate was interesting. Does Jolyne keep coming out on top because she has good luck/a positive fate, or because she's so skilled that she essentially makes her own luck? Is there functionally any difference? What would Pucci's motivation be for drawing in people with "strong fates"? The translation got pretty messy in this last chapter, but at the underlying ideas were strong enough to pull through.

I am shocked by the reveal that Dio's ugly son is Bohemian Rhapsody's user in Bohemian Rhapsody part 6 (ch 703). Also lowkey bothered because if I recall correctly Vincent van Gogh shot himself in his abdomen rather than through his head.

Bohemian Rhapsody part 7 (ch 704) was quite underwhelming. I was expecting some kind of showdown wherein they somehow outsmart the characters in the story or use their disadvantage to their advantage, or maybe even one with the stand user. I have read other people's reviews that they love this chapter for highlighting the "bizarre" in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and I completely agree with that.

It's Been a While, Romeo (ch 705) was nice because I missed Jolyne and Ermes. I too am surprised by Romeo not actually lying to Jolyne; although he's still an ass, so I'm glad that Jolyne still did what she did. Emporio's excitement was so cute too.

I do not know how I feel about Sky High part 1 (ch 706). I found Sky High and the rod lore kinda lame. I am interested in Rakiel's character though because he both grosses me out so much, and elicits my sympathy. I like how Pucci really is DIO's disciple, spreading his word, and bringing salvation to people.

I thought Pucci no longer had White Snake. How was he able to see Rykiel's discs?

Sky High part 2 (ch 707) wasn't that interesting to me personally. I'm really so unimpressed by Sky High the stand. I enjoyed seeing Jolyne figure out how they can see the rods though! That was really smart, and I feel like she can figure out a way to determine whether Schrödinger's cat is dead or alive. I also love seeing her use Stone Free especially when she starts unraveling herself!

Sky High part 3 (ch 708) was quite funny. Jolyne just had her head on the whole time, while Rykiel's will was wavering the whole time. I am starting to appreciate his stand now as it is related to his spirit and confidence.

I can finally appreciate the rods in Sky High part 4 (ch 709). How does everyone here seem to have brain cells. Jolyne was so cool! Or rather hot.

Sky High part 5 (ch 710) was amazing. I'm really growing to appreciate Rykiel and Jolyne. The lines "then I don't have to use my eyes... then I don't have to breathe" go SO hard.

Sky High part 6 (ch 711) was so good. This arc did not feel as tense or high stakes as most Jojo fights, but I enjoyed the character development. Rykiel gaining strength and the will to live from his reason to do so: helping his father realize his dream. Jolyne was so cool, badass, and smart here. I also loved how there was this conflict of sorts like she didn't want to beat Rykiel yet just to get information out of him. Also the reveal that Pucci and Weather Reporter are siblings is so wild, and I'm super glad that was not spoiled for me. I love the whole thing between coincidence and calculation since it's somewhat reminiscent of the sleeping slaves arc, but also somewhat worse due to the insinuation that they're all just Dio's pawns.

ERMES!! she has made her return and what a return she has made. i love her and emporio’s dynamic, they work really well together. her and jolyne contrast super well and i missed that balance a LOT. i’m really enjoying seeing all of dio’s children as pucci takes advantage of all of them to “attain heaven”. i am just so so invested right now lmao

I think Rykiel is probably one of the more fleshed out side antagonists of Stone Ocean, and Araki does a pretty cool job of showing how this guy overcomes his anxiety of being inadequate with finally having some power.

This volume was much easier to follow in B&W than volume 12. I also liked that the Sky High arc had as much dialogue as it did and that Emporio was an asset to the team in discovering the enemy's ability, and flying a helicopter.

This is probably where we see the biggest change in Jolyne's resolve since she was battling in solitary!
