Tohru and company have been having a lot more fun ever since Kisa came to visit. Now it's time for Tohru to meet another member of the Zodiac - the skillfully sarcastic grade-school student, Hiro! One way or another, this tyke will have to deal with his resentment of Tohru and his affection for Kisa. Where will he find the answers? In the fabulous 7th volume of the super-popular Fruits Basket, of course!
Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.
In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.
According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.
I still love this and I doubt there’ll come a day I won’t enjoy “Fruits Basket”. *lol* It’s impossible to dislike this Manga. XD
Highlights of this volume:
”Aw, forget it. I’m just really sorry, okay? Hey, what are you smiling about?”
Kyu-kun saying that he’s sorry for hurting Tohru in the last volume!!! So damn cute!!! <333 Those two should be together. Like seriously, they should be endgame! ;-P
”When the person you love gets hurt because of you, you feel like the most pathetic, worthless person on earth.”
Oh, no Hatori-san! T_T I love Shigure’s and his conversations but knowing his background this really hurt and hit me straight in the heart! *sniff* I really hope Hatori will find love one day!
”I love her. I wanted to be free to act on my feelings and wanted that person to understand.”
Aww little Hiro! I’ll never be able to get over the cruelty of Akito! Such a mean family head! Hiro’s story broke my heart and I hope Kisa and he will be happy one day. =))
”All this time you’ve tried to keep away the beautiful things in life, but suddenly you feel confused. You begin to love the beautiful things. For there to be pain, there has to be kindness. For darkness to stand out, there has to be the sun. You can’t have one without the other. And both have their uses.”
I love that Uo-chan and Tohru’s mom were so close and haha it’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that Uo-chan was once a member of a gang. Still, it’s awesome that she quit and decided to start a new life. It takes strength to leave a past like that and I’m so glad Tohru is still her friend. XD
I have mixed feelings about this volume - I really enjoyed Uotani's backstory and seeing her growth as a character, the whole Yuki fanclub thing is getting a bit silly and Hiro is VILE. So yeah, both good and bad here. I honestly don't know how much of Hiro I'm going to be able to take.
Pretty good, I especially liked Uo's flashback of Tohru and her mum. Hiro was a bit of a brat though, but I guess it was cute how much he loved Kisa and was jealous of Tohru. Looking forward to the next one.
The exploration of the bratty Hiro continues into this volume, and we come to understand why his behaviour is so harsh towards Tohru. A Sohma who isn't considerably nice was a change, and we are able to see another insight into the cruel character of Akito. A pretty uneventful volume but still fun. We see that Akito has a control on all the Sohma's in some way, using fear as the main mechanism of control.
I like it how this book includes the feelings and thoughts of a club at a school who only think and talk about the character Yuki. The group sure is weird but is pretty interesting to hear about why they liked Yuki so much.
I LOVED Uo-chan's backstory, really got me in the feels. I DIDNT however, love Hiro, I know he's meant to be an annoying kid, and I get where he's coming from, but he IS a little conceited and annoying for me to handle, haha. You can brush him off in the anime (2018 ver), but the manga made it feel slower.
Tohru's mom has been such an integral part of the story that I'm glad we got to learn more about her. Uotani's broken family background and the way Tohru and her mother's compassion helped her to find her path in life again was truely heart warming. Although I'm a bit worried about Kyou's troubled expression anytime her mother is brought up. Please don't let it be something unforgivable. I'm rooting for you guys here!
I really liked how Natsuki Takaya added Uotani's past and how she came to become friends with Tohru Honda and love Tohru's mother. I also liked how the author is adding more scenes of the Yuki fanclub. I love their reactions to certain situations and how they handle them.
In this book, Tohru's friends can't stand seeing her in her old middle school bathing suit, so they pool their money and buy her a new one! While they are shopping, Uotani opens up about her past running with a gang, and how Tohru's mother helped her find self-respect again. I love the flashbacks!
We meet Hiro Sohma for the first time here, and I hate that stupid kid so much. He's consistently rude to everyone, and while I understand that comes from some deep pain, I can't really forgive him for it. He pushes everyone away, and he's so mean to Tohru! I do love seeing his friendship with Kisa though. I'm hoping to see lots of character development from Hiro in the future, because that horrid little monster child needs some redemption or something.
I'm getting increasingly disturbed by all the domestic abuse going on from Akito, the head of the family. Is there any member of the Sohma family that he hasn't beaten up? And why do they all forgive him, and say 'it's not his fault', and 'you can't blame Akito'? Maybe it's the culture that the head of the family can do no wrong, but that guy needs to be in jail!
I swear, that Motoko, the president of the Yuki Fan Club, is nutso. She is certifiable insane and weird. She says the craziest things trying to express her love for Yuki, and her obsession is gonna cause problems.
I remember the episode of the anime that we met Hiro. I couldn't stand this kid. I don't care what he's going through. He's a little jerk. He needs to learn some manners.
I like the chapters that go into Uo's relationship with Kyoko. It's pretty cool to see Uo's background. It also gave a little more insight into Tohru's relationship with her mother. Kyoko sounds like she was really awesome. It's sad that she died.
The last chapter I remember from the anime too. Again, it's pretty cool to see into another person's life besides Tohru's. Yuki is so sweet and oblivious to the girls in his fan club. They're truly creepy about the way they spy on him, and he seems to know nothing about it. I think that's kind of unusual considering Yuki is usually more perceptive than that.
Though this was a pretty good volume with some cute chapters, I miss Kyo and Tohru. I wanted a little more of them in the story. Hopefully, the next will have more.
This isn't actually a review, but if anyone is interested...I actually have my fan art on the back of this book!!! Just look for Elizabeth J. D., from Mustang, OK. ;) Then chat with me about all things Fruits Basket after if you enjoyed!
I usually don't write reviews for manga just because I don't read enough of them to be able to say anything more compelling than "that was a fun read!" They're so quick and episodic that the various issues just tend to blur into the entire storyline, so from my perspective, it's counterproductive to write out reviews for specific issues.
But not this time. This was such a nothing burger. Volume 7 is pure filler and, worse - it's boring filler. The only thing worthy of note that happened is that Hiro, the ram, is introduced and he's the most unlikable of the Sohmas yet. We spend a whole chapter on him and how he's in love with the forgettable child character, Risa. I didn't mind Risa before this. I liked her chapter about how the people around silenced her and how Torhu and the Sohmas helped her cope with it. I liked how they coped with the bullying, but that doesn't mean I actually liked Risa, a nothing character that I was surprised she was brought back to be a prominent character in another chapter.
After we get treated to this backstory of this unlikable Hiro character, we then get treated to backstory for Uotani and - get this - one of girls from the Yuki Club. I like Tohru's friends, but not so much that I feel the need to learn all their backstories. This was a character history I could've done without. Other than allowing the reader to get to know Torhu's mom, Kyoko, this was such a pointless chapter that will no doubt have absolutely no bearing on the overarching story.
If you've read Fruits Basket, do I really need to explain why a chapter dedicated to a Yuki Club girl is pointless?
I'm enjoying this series (with the obvious exception of this issue), but the heart and soul is Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo. So much so that the only enjoyable part of this issue was when the three of them, along with Tohru's friends, went shopping to gift Tohru a swimsuit. And that's it. Fun's over after that.
I've heard that a lot of manga can be full of filler, but you've got to sprinkle it in with stuff the reader actually wants to read. Don't give me four full chapters of it, centering characters I care little to nothing about. And the worst crime of all: this was the Hatori cover! Hatori's my favorite character and they put him in the worst issue imaginable. They should've put Kagura here instead. Nobody cares about her >.>
This volume had a lot going on, and t was a true gem. I will say I don't really like Hiro's character is a rude little kid. However, I will say what redeems him in my eyes is that he does love Kisa (who another one of my favorite zodiac memebers) and I can understand why he is mean towards Torhu and his nature is normal for a sixth grader to show their jealousy.
We also learn about Arisa/Uo's past and her gang affiliation and how she befriended Torhu. I loved this part of the story and thought it was executed beautifully. There were so many emotional moments within this part of the volume I found it just stunning.
There was also the lighthearted ending with the Yuki fan-girls that I just had to laugh out loud with. Overall, great volume!
And I will never give this series anything less than a five. There. I just saved you from hanging around my nutty self and seeing what I have to rave about this time. That's right. This review is more raving and more craziness... so... just warning you now. So, let's get started!!! Oh my word!!! This volume was amazing! YES! It was amazing! You got to see another member of the Zodiac, Uo's past, and even see retarded girls fond over Yuki. Okay... so that last part was a bit annoying for me but everything else was great! I love seeing the other members of the Zodiac because they are so different from each other but all have a loving quality about them... if you're smart enough to see it, that is. Also, who doesn't like learning more about these characters? This volume went really into Uotani's past with Tohru and Kyoko. It was really moving and I just loved it.
Takaya-sensei really made me feel, "NO! NOT MY FAVORITE MANGAKA!!! IS SHE ALRIGHT!?" She tells the reader about her time in the hospital. That's right! Hospital. And it made me feel really worried. Although, seeing how she told the story, I was just glad. She has a wonderful attitude on life and it makes me happy that she's doing great. I know this happened years ago but I'm glad that during that time, nothing too bad happened to her. Her family must have been worried. It was a good story and it shows you another side to the great artist who started this series. Is it possible to love her even more because of this? Yeah. My love for her just keeps growing. I don't know how that's possible but... it is! XD The story she wrote for this volume was also sad but... it wasn't as bad as the previous volume, which was nice. I couldn't take anymore depression. XP Oh... and she's doing a fabulous job in making me want to murder Akito (more on that later).
This volume mostly centered around Hiro, Uotani, and Minagawa (although she's a small part compared to the other two). Hiro is another member of the Chinese Zodiac and he's just so cute. Well, physically... inside he's a rotten brat. I'll admit that he can be quite annoying at times... well, most of the time. But I feel that you need to have a certain level of maturity to understand his rebellious nature. I guess I understand why some children act the way they do because I'm studying the child's mentality (I won't bore you with the deets) so for me, I can sympathise with him. Growing up the way I did, I was very angry at a lot of things (myself included) for a very long time so... I suppose I related to him in a way most wouldn't. I urge you, however, don't let his actions deter you from reading this volume. He is a kind boy... you just have to look pass his flaws. Besides, he's just way too adorable with Kisa. <3 My favorite part of this volume is seeing more of Uotani's background. I love seeing how she was when she was younger and seeing how she came to meet Tohru. Her relationship with Kyoko was truly lovely and because of this "flashback," you get to know a little bit about Kyoko as well. One of the greatest back stories told so far!
Minagawa is just a pathetic schoolgirl in love with Yuki, like everyone else of the studentbody! (I don't get what they see in him. I don't think he's that amazing of a guy. Oh well... I guess I'm in the minority.) I really didn't like this part of the manga but it's not like she's a horrible character. I just think a senior who's just about ready to graduate from high school should be worrying about other things, like exams and college, instead of worrying about boys. Call me a realist. But there's other things good about this particular story! If it wasn't for this story, we wouldn't see two new characters that has nothing to do with the Zodiac join in! But that's all I'm saying about that. The other characters really didn't have big roles in this volume but you do get to see them. Like Hatori! Love him! Too bad Haru wasn't here... *Pouts* ...but Shigure does mention him and Rin! I love Rin but I can't say much on that one either. I will say this... Akito. Needs. To. Die!!! He's the cruelest, selfish, inconsiderate prick I have ever come across in a manga! >_< God damn that bastard! >_< Ugh! He makes me sick! He did something to Kisa that's just so revolting! It's... ew... I don't like him! I don't care what his reasonings are, I just want him gone! >_< Stupid curse making them not blame him. BREAK IT! BREAK IT I SAY!!!
Anyway, this volume got me a bit riled up but that's to be expected since AKITO was there. Well, not there there but... oh just read it and find out for yourself! -_-" There's a lot of things in this volume that might get on your nerves, I know it did me. However, there's so many other things that out-weigh all the annoyance that you care more for the good than the blah. That's right. It's how I speak, so deal. Anyway, I love this manga. I really do. And it's about here where everything starts going... well.. down hill... but in a good way. It makes the series more interesting and there's still quite a few characters we haven't met yet so we still have a long way to go. I'm so excited to see the other members of the Zodiac, see the current characters go through more development, and even see the romance~ I know... I want to see romance... I must have fallen on my head or something. In any case, go and read this series. It's very creative and fun. Just worth the read in my opinion! Well, see you in the next volume! Matta ne!
"For there to be pain, there has to be kindness. For darkness to standout there has to be the sun. You can't have one without the other, and both have their uses. So even if you stumble and make mistakes, that's not useless. Think of it as fertilizer, sure it feels like crap, but it will help you grow. "
Pretty good! Hiro can be a bit much, especially in his introductory chapter, which is the main reason I’m not giving this volume five stars. The chapters on Uotani’s backstory were outstanding! The last chapter in this volume is a nice parallel to what happened in volume 6, though from a very different angle.
Love Love Love getting the back story of Uo-chan and Kyoko san definitely one of my favorite volumes yet! Still confused about the relationship aspect though haha
