A Love of Time

Rate this book
From the writer of Memoirs of Elise comes a story of romance and time travel, action and adventure, that spans three eras of Mackinac Island's history.

“There is a love that surpasses romantic love. It is called sacrificial love. And it is the most romantic love that I have ever known.”

David Andrews had never felt at home, that is, until he came to Mackinac Island — a place where time seemed to stand still, a place reminiscent of simpler days. But a journey back in time to the turn of the century shows him those days were not so simple. Will the love he finds in the past make his perilous journey worthwhile?

Besides bringing me to Mackinac Island, writing Memoirs of Elise helped me to realize that I loved crafting plots, scenes, and dialog - processes of screenwriting. So after writing my second novel, A Love of Time, I tried my hand at adapting it to a screenplay, and once I learned the format, found I was very comfortable with the screenwriting process. So much so that, my novel Amy's Flowers was first written as a screenplay and then afterwards novelized. Over the last few years, I've co-written two stageplays and have found the stage format to be the most comfortable and enjoyable for me of all story telling forms.

My first love was music. I started playing guitar at the age of 11, and rocked out for 33 years. But while working on Memoirs of Elise I discovered and fell hopelessly in love with classical music. This inspired the composition of two filmscore-like music CDs, with a third one in the works.

My most recent projects are The Busy Little Mouse (a children's book which was illustrated by my Ukrainian in-laws), and Memoirs of a Trumpster (a political chronicle of the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections).

Since I can’t seem to get Memoirs of Elise without selling my first born for an exorbitant amount of money, I’ve settled for this. A considerably cheaper book, along the same vein as Somewhere In Time. This is more influenced by the film itself (I still don’t understand how such a great film came from the original book by Richard Matheson.)

I managed to get my hands on a signed copy, to Ed & Le Roy, dated January 2002 - so thank you to Ed & Le Roy for selling your book. (Don’t get me started on people who sell signed copies of books that are personalised to them - I know there can be issues such as house clearances etc, but it just seems such a shame!)

This is a good book and an easy read, but I do feel like there were too much lifted almost from Somewhere In Time directly. Some of the phrasing and the looks and just other things that I could not put my finger on. Perhaps it was because it was written by the author shortly after the Somewhere In Time prequel and he still wanted to stay in Mackinac Island.

I didn’t really vibe too much with the main character of David. He came across as very self absorbed and I just didn’t care for him. He was certainly not as likeable as Richard Collier in Somewhere In Time for example. I think the author was trying to recapture the magical chemistry that Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour had on screen but for me, the Kathleen/David storyline just felt a little off. Again, it’s not something that I could put my finger on. Almost like the author was trying too hard.

The book lost it for me about the 150 page mark/three quarters of the way through. For some reason, after essentially telling the Somewhere In Time storyline again, the author takes a complete 180 and starts a conversation about philosophy and the meaning of life (the meaning of time travel?) and I just couldn’t figure out what that had to do with the rest of the story. This falls quite flat for me and sort of ruined the ending, because being almost at the finish line, I felt like I was plodding through quicksand, page by page, line by line.

The cover is very pretty and eye catching but for me, the author has failed to recapture the magic of the Somewhere In Time film and instead has produced a slightly boring and predictable romance. Has this put me off trying to get my greedy paws on a copy of Memoirs of Elise? No, but I will go into it slightly more sceptical than I was originally.

2.5 stars, rounded up to 3, because I loved Somewhere In Time.

This book is very much like "Somewhere in Time", but it is different enough to be interesting. This time, David finds a time portal in Skull Cave. That is a very interesting concept. I've been to Mackinac Island quite a few times, and I'm not real sure all the locations were correct. But it is a novel, so the author has some leeway in that. I had read that the book had a happy ending. Delightfully, it wasn't in the form that I expected.

This book is my favorite book. I got it when I was visiting the island years ago. I was so lucky to get a signed copy from the author himself! I wish I could have shared with him how much I loved his novel. It was simply wonderful how you travel in time with this character.

I didn't have high hopes for this book--I knew it would be fluff reading. I love "Somewhere in Time" and knew this was a spin off. Sign me up! Unfortunately, the main character, David, is not the brightest bulb and he's a bit self-centered. By a bit, I mean a lot. David needed a little more development and the romance needed more chemistry.

However, the descriptions of Mackinaw Island were lovely and spot on and the cover is gorgeous!

If you have watched or read Somewhere In Time, you MUST read David L. Gurnee, A Love of Time. I read it when it first came out and it is one of my all time favorite reads. My adult kids have copies and they are fans too. He is a very talented writer and I look forward to reading all of his books on Goodreads.
