Research and teaching interests include dramatic theory and Western European theatre history and dramatic literature, especially of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. He has been awarded the ATHE Career Achievement Award, the George Jean Nathan Prize, the Bernard Hewitt prize, the George Freedley Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has been a Walker-Ames Professor at the University of Washington, a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Indiana University, a Visiting Professor at Freie Universität Berlin, and a Fellow of the American Theatre. In 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Athens. His best-known book, Theories of the Theatre (Cornell University Press, 1993), has been translated into seven languages. His 2001 book, The Haunted Stage won the Calloway Prize.
His newest book, Speaking in Tongues, was published by the University of Michigan Press in 2006.

Every Theatre History/Dramatic Criticism student needs to have this book on their shelf. It is an excellent and accessible resource for anyone struggling to understand how all of the puzzle pieces fit together.

هذه المراجعة تقتصر على الجزء الأول فقط من الطبعة التي أصدرها المركز القومي للترجمة، ترجمة الأستاذ مجدي زيد، وهو الجزء الذي يتوقف عند فرنسا في القرن الثامن عشر، وهو الجزء الذي لا أظن أنني سأتجاوزه إلى الجزئين التاليين.
لا أستطيع أن أنكر أن الكتاب يتميز عن غيره في أنه قدم صورة لسيرورة نظرة المسرح بدءًا من أرسطو ومرورًا بالعصر الروماني والعصور والوسطى والنهضة.. إلخ، ولا أنكر كذلك الجهد الذي بذله الكاتب في بلوغ هذه المادة، وهو جهد كان - دون شك- جهدًا مضنيًا. ولكني أراه توقف عند هذا الجهد لم يجاوزه، ذلك أنه يقدم هذه المادة مبعثرة مشتتة، مع أنه بقليل من الترتيب كان من الممكن أن يقدم عملًا عظيمًا، ولا أظن أن هذا كان سيستغرق منه جهدًا كالذي بذله في التجميع، إنما هي بضعة أشهر كان يقضيها في تحليل هذه المادة وتنضيدها.
ولكن الكتاب انتهى إلى تجميع آراء مختلفة تجميعًا لا يكاد يتجاوز أسلوب رواتنا القدماء في الإسناد والعنعنة، فهو قد ألقى الآراء والنظريات كما هي، مع أن جهدًا بسيطًا كان بإمكانه أن يحذف كثيرًا من هذه النظريات المتكررة، وأن يعيد ترتيب كل منها في جانب.
أما عن الترجمة فليست أفضل حالًا، فالترجمة جافة تركتب غالبية عناوين الكتاب والمقالات دون ترجمة. وقد يكون ذلك غير ذي شأن فيما يخص الإنجليزية التي نعرفها جميعًا تقريبًا، أما اللغات الأخرى كالفرنسية والألمانية فهذا أمر مزعج. كذلك لم تخل صفحة من أخطاء مطبعية وأخطاء في الصياغة تجعل المعنى ملتبسًا في أحيان كثيرة، ويتطلب منك الأمر عددًا من الصفحات حتى تتعود هذه الأخطاء وتبدأ في تصحيحا في القادم من فصول وحدك!

Humbling and inspiring. For anyone interested in a broader view of theater history beyond Brockett this is a must have. This incredible survey continues to help me understand the story of great thought about theater and inspires me to read original sources. The language is straightforward and accessible and the content is exhaustive. The final chapter on semiotic and feminist approaches to historiography was for me especially useful for approaching modern theoretical controversy.
