The blurb and the premise of this book really engaged me and I'm still intrigued by it but I will never finish it.

The prose is truly awful. Unreadable, dense, and meaningless. It's like the author was trying to give it literary depth and layers of meaning but to me it just sounded wanky and show-offy.

I gave it a couple of attempts with a few months in between in case it was my mood but I have to give up and admit that this one is not for me.

It's full of complex techno-gadgetry and very long Germanic words, but the gist of it is that mad scientists develop IVF technology to create a master race resistant to bio-terrorism. Sharkey is the innocent journalist who stumbles into this discovery, but it turns out....

Life is far too short to waste on this overblown, hyperbolic and, finally, unsuccessful attempt to revisit Vienna, Philip Kerr style 60 years on. Go back to the original - Berlin Noir - for a truly satisfying read.

I thought this book would be a fairly straightforward ‘newshound roots out evil plot’ story. Instead it’s far more nuanced and a good deal better written than I expected. An well plotted story with some interesting characters. Not a classic, but definitely worth reading. I wanted to give it 3.5.
