This volume is intended as a textbook for college and seminary classes. Four main divisions of Church history have been made 1. the organic relation between Christianity and the Old Testament religion, 2. the formative period of the Early Church, 3. the underlying principles of the Reformation and the Counter Reformation, and 4. the development of American Christianity. In this second edition, the section on the Middle Ages has been lengthened, and three chapters have been added, dealing with the Churches in Canada, Christian Missions, and Church Unity respectively.
This was my textbook in college and was my favorite religion text book. The Lutheran Church is an amalgamation, over time, of literally dozens of national and independent Lutheran Synods who emigrated to America. They stayed separate for a time and then began to coalesce.
