Modern Philosophy: An Anthology of Primary Sources

This new anthology offers the key works of seven major philosophers along with a rich selection of associated texts by other leading thinkers of the period chosen to enhance the reader's understanding of modern philosophy and its relationship to the natural science of the time. A brief general introduction describes the intellectual climate in which the works to follow were conceived. Short chapter introductions give pertinent details about specific philosophers and their works. Texts are provided in their entirety or in substantive selections, including a new abridgement of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason commissioned especially for this volume. Alternatives to the 'main' texts -- for example, Kant's Prolegomena is also included -- give instructors flexibility while providing students with the best translations of the primary source materials at an eminently reasonable price. Roger Ariew is Professor of Philosophy and Eric Watkins is Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

A great anthology to have a general overview of modern philosophy. There is a 99% chance you would be reading this in class, although if you find the complete works of such legends as Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, Berkeley, Hume and Kant hard to read, this book will suit you well.

Good collection. In terms of the editions/translations chosen, some books (e.g. Spinoza's Ethics and Kant's Critique) were difficult. In my opinion, there are better translations out there. Overall, solid textbook.

A compilation of several modern philosopher's greatest works. Good breadth of sources and an easy read- well, as easy a read as is possible for a good philosophy book! Good translations and updates.

Recommended for those with a solid foundation in philosophy and a healthy enthusiasm for the discipline.

Great anthology of the relevant works by the 'modern philosophers' (Descartes through Kant). If you don't feel like spending the money on the individual works, but still want to get acquainted with these famous thinkers, this anthology is worth buying.
