I cannot recommend this book highly enough. One of the best books for the case on why we should read classics ever written. Everyone should read this book.

I originally bought this for the book list, but, after reading it all, I have a new appreciation for classics for kids (and for myself). It is important to note that the author does not advocate educating children using ONLY classical books but rather argues that classics have a place in the curriculum alongside newer books. I particularly like how the author suggests classics from all parts of the world, written by authors of varying ethnicities, religions, race and genders, since one of my biggest hesitations about The Great Books and Classical education is that they seem to focus on Western Civilization with white, male, Christian authors. I also like Thompson’s argument that there is all the more reason to read a banned book for the reasons it was banned. I’m excited to start using MCT’s classics-based Language Arts curriculum with my son in the fall.

This really described my exact situation in school, where I loved to read, but hated having to read for class because it was all about getting a certain answer from the book instead of it being a personal experience.

Super short and to the point. Definitely worth reading.

Beyond stressing the importance of the classics, Thompson reminds us to teach VIA our own passion and has lots of suggestions for teaching. The book is well organized and includes a reading list.I like the author. This is one of those books that makes me think, "Dang. I wish I was friends with this guy and could sit around chatting on Thursday evenings".

Quick read, but full of inspiration for why classics are important.
