Few sources radiate into me a reading pleasure more consistent or more enigmatic than 1950s-1990s astronomy. These well illustrated and clearly written papers also capture the study of galaxies at a fruitful period in which a wide array of problems were being solved (galactic types, dynamics, and clustering), developed (galactic nuclei, voids, and quasars), and collated for a coming crisis (rotation curves and the "dark matter" -- not yet recognized as that dark matter -- they imply).
