Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdry's acclaimed Railway Series.

The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.

I don't know that I actually had this as a child or just watched the show (or second-hand watched it), but it is a weird book. Terrible lessons, first of all. In the first story, Thomas is a jerk, so Gordon gets revenge. That's it. The lesson is get revenge, I guess? Then weirdo Henry won't come out of a tunnel so after Topham Hatt insists he can't do anything physical, they just put bricks over Henry for some reason. They already removed the tracks! Why the bricks?! It's a little horrifying.

Jesus H I'm glad my son's Thomas days are over lol. We read through a few of these and watched more episodes than I wanted to. Thomas is not my favorite but... I get it... it's attractive to little kids. Regardless, glad these days are past and these books are flying the bookshelf coop!

Several Thomas stories straight from the episodes. Pictures taken directly from them too. Written for print so perfectly you don't lose the experience. We love these!

This is one confusing book! The boy I read it to was captivated by the pictures but both of us struggled with the actual story. It's actually a few different stories that all come together to form one bit story but I didn't really like it. Plus I think the language is incredibly complicated and sophisticated given the target audience. I think there are a lot of better books about trains out there and I'd recommend skipping this one.

Natalie is suddenly excited about Thomas, though she never really watches the show. It comes on just as she is leaving the living room to go in for her bath. Anyway, she brought this book over to me all excited when we were at the library and continues to do so now that it is home. She will only sit and look at it for a couple of pages, whether we read it or just look at the pictures.

This book has a repeat story from another book I sent to my nephew. The stories in this one are Thomas Gets Tricked, Come Out Henry!, Henry to the Rescue, and A Big Day For Thomas. The Henry stories could be considered one big story because Henry hides in a cave in one story and finally comes out in the second. Thomas lovers will like these, but I feel like better lessons are required.

My son loves this. I can handle it-but it isn't my favorite. I am an advocate of the books on CD, though. He loves to listen to them in his room-he says "I do it by self!"

Another wonderful Thomas story (according to Frank). Frank's favorite part is when Gordon is rushing too fast for Thomas (who is coupled up behind his train).
