Wedding Cake Wishes
To save his mother's business, rugged outdoorsman Logan Warren has to learn about wedding cakes and keeping customers. A confirmed bachelor, he can barely handle the brides that come in wanting buttercream this and frosted that. Yet when family friend Caroline Scott offers to help out, Logan isn't relieved. Caroline is his polar opposite. He's motorcycles and wildlife-she's business suits and ledgers. The one thing they have in common? Not wanting to get married. The premise sounded really good. Cake store owner has a stroke, her SON takes over the business while his mom is recuperating. I thought, 'Wow, that could be cute!'
It wasn't.
The woman writing this blew the whole thing. First, she wouldn't let anyone in the heads of her characters - and what limited information we're given about them is disjointed and hard to follow. Second, it's the third in a series, so there's a LOT of references to previous things that have happened that I couldn't keep up with, as someone reading *just* this book. Nobody likes to be thrown into chaos of "Who's Dylan marrying, again?" And Haley is WHICH sister? I can't... even. No. Just NO.
Then there's the writing - the voice of this book conveys that the author is a jumbled MESS. She wants to write, but she doesn't have the patience or ability to STORYTELL... and that's what makes for an enjoyable book. The writing is impersonal and more telling than showing what's happening. It feels cold and wrong and distant... I couldn't connect with Logan OR Caroline. The secondary characters all felt the same.
As for the spirituality, Caroline works on the Sabbath *AND* Sunday, references the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" album (the one with Alistair Crowley - the father of Satanism - on the cover?), stares at the floor whenever she might have a feeling surface (and she stares at a LOT of floors in this book)... the sermon had an agenda (which is never pretty in an 'inspirational' book)... while Logan gets out and communes with God, we see no reason to believe Caroline's faith is tenable, or even more than just surface.
More, the additional 'struggles' (Caroline losing her job, Logan... being misunderstood? Resisting 'matchmaking' that wasn't really happening?) aren't fleshed out, aren't given to us so that we feel what they're feeling, or even know where they're standing with their lives. It's NOT a story - it's a badly written, nearly clinical take on a story. Instead of getting involved in the cake shop, they spend all of their time taking inventory (!?) and learning the computer system. Instead of a feeling of warmth and sweetness and creamy goodness, we get ladders and clipboards. It's... just not BEAUTIFUL or FUN or anything that would draw a reader to this book.
The idea was a good one. I would LOVE to see a decent writer tackle it - maybe I could have fun with the idea, myself. But this? This book was NOT good. I had to force myself to make it halfway thru, and when I got there, it was a relief to close it. Pass on this one.

I could not finish this book. I did not like the characters at all.

Wedding Cake Wishes is the third book of a series called Wedding Bell Blessings. I have not read the other books and I enjoyed this one. It is a Love Inspired book which means it is romanicc but not sexual. It was my Just for Fun book for April.

Cute book- typical boy meets girl, but entertaining.
