Recommends it for: Beginning and experienced Tarot readers.

There are many fine beginners' books on how to read tarot cards. Kim Huggens covers much of the same material as these other books, but approaches the subject in a new way. The most noticeable difference between Tarot 101 and these other books is how Huggens has organized the lessons on the Major Arcana. Instead of starting at The Fool and working her way in numerical order to The World, she groups the cards by theme and devotes a chapter to each theme. Some themes such as "Feminine Archetypes" ...more

Tarot 101 is an imposing title for a book, since the implication is clear: This book is required reading for beginning tarot students. If you scan the table of contents, it certainly appears different from many other tarot books, because there’s not a listing for each card; it has entries like “Optional Homework” and “Further Reading”. And whole chapters on archetypes? Are you sure this isn’t American

This is an excellent book for beginner or seasoned tarot readers alike! Well, I myself am a beginner so I guess I can't speak for the seasoned tarot readers. Overall I found this book to be comprehensive and easily understandable, while not lacking any depth. I'm a bit lazy to write a review at the moment, but in short, this book gives you very great definitions on each card and offers you many way to explore tarot--using astrology, numerology, elemental symbolism, etc etc. There are many gold m ...more

I love how Kim organizes the cards in the book. She diverges from the traditional beginner book that goes through the cards from 0-21 and instead groups the cards based on theme. This made exploring the cards incredibly more fun and insightful for me. It helped me branch away from the rigidity seen in many beginner books and encourages the reader to have their own interpretation and not to be afraid to do things outside the box. It was an enjoyable and educational book!

Absolutely amazing! I loved the diversity of schools of thought Kim brought to this book in so many ways. Giving us the Crowley/Thoth interpretation and the Rider-Waite, for one, and giving advice from the most prosaic of concerns (what to wear when giving professional readings) to the most profound (pathworking), discussing the different approaches to the cards (skeptics and psychics both welcome), her examples to help you understand the cards came from Harry Potter, Plato, LoTR, Aristotle, etc ...more

A great introduction to Tarot even for a sceptic like me, a really concise, informative and professional tool, with clear direction and focus but at the same time with a colloqual, conversational and personal tone.

The book is written in the form of easily digestable lessons to guide the beginner into the world of Tarot reading, both for themselves and others for what ever reason, not just the hows, but also the self analysis aswell as outlining the responsibilities involved with Tarot reading.

Though the chapter organization left something to be desired (separate chapters for the Major/Minor arcana and the cour cards was annoying), it was asy to read and very helpful!
