The author enjoys puns. LA Lawman Hugh "Chill" Blaines is pissed off because his ex-partner wrote a "tell all" but it's fiction book featuring "Drew Maines". It's a light book but has some fun in it. I may try another by this author.

After a scandal, Hugh "Chill" Blaines leaves his police job in California to wander the US. During his stop in Taos, New Mexico, his name is given to the town commission as possible sheriff. Chill likes this town so he accepts. Carmen Pollini is having a bad month. Apparently she has a bad temper and keeps getting involved in various misdemeanors ending in arrest by Sheriff Jim Dunn who, for some unknown reason, has it in for her. When the local R.E.D. driver is found dead on her front porch, no questions asked, Jim immediately arrests Carmen. When Chill encounters Carmen, he can't decide whether she's guilty of these crimes or an innocent bystander.

The tension between them is a mix of sexual tension and guilty conscious which leaves Chill thinking Carmen really is hiding something important. But Taos is a small town and close proximity ramps up the sexual tension. Though this book is not touted as romantic suspense, it does have all the elements of such a book except the ultimate payoff. I will definitely be reading more Carmen and Chill mysteries.

New Taos county sheriff Chill Blaines has reason to be leary of writers, and he's especially suspicious of hot-tempered independent Carmen Pollini, who's just found the body of the deliveryman she's been feuding with on her doorstep. Carmen isn't leveling with him, and Chill knows it. What it takes him a while to find out is that Carmen has two different stalkers--one who loves her too much; one who hates her too much. But is one trying to protect her by killing people who irritate her? Or is the other trying to frame her for murder?

It is a fun read, lots of twists and turns. Interesting characters. It's a chick book, Friday night book, quick read.
To me, I loved Taos when I was there, so it's perhaps more romantic to me.........

This was a fun mystery. I liked the setting, and the main characters look like they will continue to be interesting in future books.

An unexpected find, I hadn't heard of Linda before. I'll be on the lookout for more of the Carmen/Chill series. Very entertaining, indeed!

Well, I did make it all the way through, at least... but damn this book needs a proofreader (in English and Spanish) and some more interesting characters.
