After Corto Maltese: La ballade de la mer salée, this is my favorite Corto story. In a city built by poets rather than architects and with a myriad of intrigues and small romances, the artwork and narrative takes us through a Venise which even now drowns in its own history.

Venice is a black book, an alchemical treaty, an athanor. Corto course the city. It is a search. He seeks the clavicle of Solomon, a mythical object for the freemasons. Of course he will not find it. but that does not have any importance.

I've never read "Fable of Venice." This review is of a different book, not listed anywhere on the Goodreads site. But if you ever go to Venice, I urge you to meet me first; I will hand this other book to you. kate and I planned three days there this year; at the end of each we looked at each other and said "just one more day." Yes, the city. But really, because we were hooked on this book, which became the city for us. It's a sort of imaginary guide book, a treasure map with no destination, one ...more

The slimmest of the volumes I've red so far, and the most disappointing. It has all the Hallmarks of the other Corto tales, but the parts don't fit together well. To many non-sequiturs and (I find it hard to believe I'm typing this) to many digressions into obscure nooks of history distract from the tale and make it a disappointing read.

Another classic Corto Maltese story, this time set in Venice (again) as Corto has to solve a mystery involving the freemasons and ancient history. Love this IDW series. Top notch reproduction here.

This episode is shorter than average for the series, but the characters are distinct and interesting, the plot is easy to follow, and the drawing is especially crisp. Fans of Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum may appreciate this tale, which doesn't really seem to advance the overall arc of Corto Maltese' life, but is a lot of fun anyway.

This book is both a great story and a love song to Venice, the beauty of the city, both real and imaginary, beautifully translated in images. Pratt not only makes us wish to visit the city, but transports us to that troublesome time after the Great War.

The story is good, but for me it is the most visually beautiful of the Corto Maltese books.

This eigth chapter in the travels of a curious sailor with a death wish that he isn't aware of is full of intrigue and great characters but a little cumbersome. Still, it's a great read and full of semi real and esoteric history but I'm very tempted to give it ****. Since it was done in 1981 AND I'm not immersed in the nuance within Italian sequentials AND one never knows what suffered in translation- it gets the top rating.

Any work of graphic literature is significantly better when the writer

As the title says this is a fable. In the opening frame Pratt himself wonders how it should be called and it sets the tone for the whole story.

Masked members of the masonic lodge, reflections in the canals, chases on the rooftops, staircases, courtyards and intricate palacies, dreams and stories deciphered from ancient runes and arabic scriptures - they all have more prominent place than Corto himself. He is a vessel going from one place to another, falling through glass ceilings and from the

If this was the only Corto Maltese book you ever read, you might wonder what all the excitement is about. He is the coolest hero, and that still comes across as he explains to a secret society, "I often fall from the clouds." Also Hugo Pratt makes each panel perfect. The overall plot includes mostly a dense, detailed historic overview and then a confrontation and solution. The upbeat ending shows that Hugo Pratt is enjoying telling a tale set in his hometown with many potentially interesting ...more

I didn't love this one. Pratt's love for Venice oozes out of every page and I loved that but the secret society/mystical overtones clouded my enjoyment and just prevented me from getting too into it. Ultimately, stripping away those elements, it's a pretty basic story that Corto is able to solve without much difficulty (possibly a feature of this being a shorter volume than some of the others).

Another extremely well told story of the enigmatic sailor Corto Maltese. He's embroiled in a quest to find a legendary jewel while fascists make trouble in the streets of Venice. It's a rollicking adventure with the engrossing art Pratt always brings to the table. Must read for fans of good comics.

Corto goes to Venice to find a mysterious emerald and, along the way, he stumbles upon a masonic lodge, a gang of thieves, an aggressive police force and a genie (?!). I'm almost sorry to give this 3 stars because I liked the sketchy drawing style and the story was OK. Until the end that is, when we get a weird deus ex machina which seriously made me reread the last couple of pages over and over again because I thought I'd missed something. Venice is also one of the magical places to which Corto Maltese regularly comes back during his travels around the globe. In “Fable of Venice”, Hugo Pratt, leads us in the secret corners of the city. While the Fascists are starting to take power, Corto is looking for a legendary emerald which is mentioned the antique, byzantine, arabic and masonic traditions. But how much of this is just sheer madness or maybe then theater?

"Fable of Venice" is another beautiful and extravagant Corto Maltese tale by Hugo Pratt. Presenting the reader with the same wild and fascinating world we've come to know and love from the other books of the series, it portrays Venice as a magical place, where masons, poets, thieves, murderers and philosophers inhabit the streets. And in the middle of all that, there's the utopian adventurer, Corto Maltese, a free sailor, who's looking for Solomon's Emerald, a mystical artifact lost in time.

Avete presente Indiana Jones e l'ultima crociata?
