Edit on 14th March 2011: On second thoughts, I'm bumping this from 8/10 to 9/10. Thinking about this book, I did truly enjoy it and can only really recall a couple of tiny, minor faults about it.

When four young women head off to the ghost-town of Hopesfall, Colorado to turn it into a bustling, prosperous saw-mill, they end up with far more than they bargained for. While Cora plans to wed her fiancee, she knows it's not safe for her friends to be alone in a town full of men. Thus Evie, Lacey a

The writing in this book drove me crazy. It wasn't always apparent who was speaking or, at times, what they meant. There is a lot of "thinking" in the middle of a conversation that really distracts the reader from the conversation. I would lose track of what they were discussing!

Oh dear. I’m not sure what to write about this one, so I’ll keep it short. I thought it was okay; I liked the idea for the story more than the actual story. I guess my biggest complaint was that there was a lot of rehashing throughout the story, and some conversations and scenes were too long. The girls drove me nuts, and I can see why they drove all the men nuts as well. For girls who are supposed to be really savvy they sure didn’t act like it at times. I just had a hard time caring about a

Seriously enjoyed this trilogy. (Note: they should definitely be read back to back, as their are unresolved storylines in books one and two)

Evie is awesome. Tremendously tenacious, complete badass, and sharp as a tack! She's got great instincts about people and trusts her gut.

Jake has a bit of a bulldozing personality at times, but it's his way of trying to care for the women.

The women's friendships were a total plus to this story. They way they support each other and look out for each other i

Good read, love the characters. Love these ladies but their plan wasn't a good one. Has you laughing at some of the shenanigans they get into.

4 stubborn women

A bit of light, fun reading that takes you into the rugged mountains of Colorado from the refined east. It canstand alone or there is plenty of room for sequels.

I'm always on the hunt for new Christian Historical Fiction authors I enjoy, but because I do not care to be preached to, it is often hard to find books in this genre that I truly love. Rugged and Relentless is the first book I have read by Kelly Eileen Hake and it most definitely will not be my last! It's been a LONG time since I've discovered a "new-to-me" Christian Fiction author who made me want to immediately go and buy more of their books. Guess it's a good thing I primarily read eBooks th ...more

This book had quite an intriguing premise -- four women decide to place an ad for husbands in order to revive a dead mining town and turn it into a sawmill town. Their good intentions did not account for the reality of the kind of men who would be showing up for such a curious promise, and the likelihood of their being able to maintain control of a town full of men. I also found it a bit ironic that the book is marketed as a Christian fiction book, though the four women have made themselves head ...more

I picked up this book because my aunt asked me to give it a try. She wanted someone to talk to about the books she had been reading and I'm happy I took her suggestion. She has been reading many historical romances and generally this is not my genre but I've been lured in and hooked.

Evie and the rest of the girls are fun to read about. I wasn't so sure at first what to expect. But instantly I fell in love with Lyman's, Ms. Higgins, and the Thompson sisters. When Jake first walked into the diner

This was the first book by this author that I have had the chance to read. I am so glad that I did too. This book was wonderfully written.

Hopes Falls is a dying town. After the collapse of the mine, the town basically evaporated. At least until Lacey hatches a plan to attempt to revitalize the area. Instead of focusing on mining, she felt their town would be better off focusing on lumber.

However, after the mine collapse, there weren’t any men to do the work. So Lacey convinces Evie and Naomi to

I like reading a book that seems like the main characters have got all their 'ducks in a row' only to find out that their are sooo many outside possibilities. Knowing that I'm not the only one that happens to helps me get through my own dilemmas at times and helps me laugh.

The four women in this book are forward thinkers for the 1800s that they live in and I like people who think outside of the box. Evie owns a diner and has her rules, like "Hat's off while you eat--house rules."

This was a cute story. I enjoyed the storyline - which was different from others I've read. I laughed in some places, was annoyed (with Brandon)at time..various things, but definitely was not bored. The thought of four single ladies advertising for husbands had me "hooked" from the beginning. I had to keep reading to discover exactly what was going to happen next. Loved all the characters...Cora, Evie, Lacey and Naomi - the women heading West to "redeem" the town that Lacey's brother Braden had ...more

One of my favorite things about Kelly Eileen Hake is that her writing is full of humor and creativity. So many books have similar story lines and if you read as much as I do, you often hear echos of past tales in each new book you encounter. Rugged and Relentless is entirely fresh and new. Who ever heard of Mail Order Husbands? What a creative idea for a series!

I found this to be a really fun book. The characters are fun, the plot is interesting, but not so overly involved to keep it from being a relaxing read. The author kept much of the descriptions to what the characters where thinking and feeling instead of what they were seeing, so this was a big plus for me as well, and kept the book moving along.

Though this is Christian fiction, there weren't any religious views shared. This, too, was a plus for me. Good clean book with characters that are moral

Sooooo...

I started this book over a year ago and after reading 181 pages it sat on my currently-reading shelf for all that time. I remember very well that it became boring and monotonous, and that keeping up with confusing POVs, and trying to figure out which character was talking in a six sided conversation was enough of a chore that I moved on to more enjoyable fare.

The funny thing is that after getting it from the library again and starting at 181 again, I found that it started to pick up at

This was a great book, although I felt it could have been better. I don't think the romance was quite there. I also think the story could have done without going to other characters' points of view.
