Interesting characters and a great ending with a major twist. If you like spy books, this is well worth reading.

oen ik de blurb van Acrobaat las, dacht ik direct: dat kan twee kanten opgaan. Of het is een verschrikkelijk slecht boek, of het is erg goed. Gelukkig, na lezing van dit boek kan ik zeggen dat het het laatste is geworden. Ik ga hier niet het hele verhaal herhalen dat op de achterkant van het omslag staat. Ik ga wel andere dingen zeggen: Gonzalo Lira heeft een boek geschreven dat – om maar eens in cliché´s te spreken – doordendert als een razende trein. Vanaf het eerste hoofdstuk vliegen de kogels, maar ook de emoties, je om de oren. En dat maakt dit boek een goed boek: het is niet allemaal geweld en achtervolgingen wat de klok slaat. Het is ook niet allemaal enge politiek, en wrijving tussen de CIA en de FBI. Het is een evenwichtig geheel. En hoewel de gedachten en emoties van de hoofdpersonen je soms wat rauw op het dak kunnen vallen, ga je toch in de loop van het verhaal met ze meeleven.
In de verte vond ik de stijl van Lira soms wat lijken op die van Carol O´Connel (zie mijn recensie van Misdaadschool). Maar waar de afstandelijke stijl van O´Connel er voor zorgt dat je niet altijd grip krijgt op de hoofdpersoon, is het Lira wel gelukt om in deze stijl levensechte mensen neer te zetten.
Ook de dialogen zijn en de sfeertekening zijn dik in orde. Als het hele groepje, uitgeput na een achtervolging, in een motel samenkomt om uit te rusten en nieuwe plannen te maken, druipt de uitputting van de pagina´s. Zoals het een goede thriller betaamt, is de plot van Acrobaat er eentje die op een doolhof lijkt: denk je als lezer net dat je het doorhebt, dan gebeurt er weer wat anders. Tot het einde toe wordt je lekker op het verkeerde been gezet.

This was an ok book. The words used to describe the gun shot (if words is what you would like to call them) started to crack me up and made me think of the Batman cartoons. I was completely confused at the end. Are they good, are they bad, who was who. Maybe I tried to read through it too quickly but I was spinning in a circle by the time I was finished.
