Brooding Enforcer, Sleeping Lion!

Mercury’s Mate died when he was still in the Labs. He is one of the strongest breeds ever created and was certain that a 15 year old girl in his lab was his mate. He was attracted to her and was. Tasting the hormone in his mouth at the time that she died on a mission. After which, he went feral and killed a bunch of scientists and trainers in the Lab before he was subdued. They were able to put him on a drug therapy which basically suppressed his inner Lion and his fierce control has kept the beast chained deep down inside him ever since, despite being weaned off the drugs.

Ria Rodriguez arrives at Sanctuary at the request of Dane Vanderale, she works for the Leo as a paper pusher as far as the people of Sanctuary know. She is actually there to see if she can look into outgoing transmissions and decipher any codes. Code-breaking is one of he skill sets and she is looking to uncover a spy within Sanctuary who is selling secrets of mating heat and extended lifespans to pharmaceutical companies.

Mercury is her bodyguard and he is attracted to her from the start though he knows she will never be his mate, he still wants her. Ria is attracted to Mercury but doesn’t want a one night stand or to get hurt. This is another great story with lots of unexpected twists and turns and of course a very steamy romance between the two main characters. I just can’t get enough.

Mercury was one of most animalistic Breeds ever created. He was stronger, had better senses and was one of the best soldiers in the labs until one day when he went into "feral displacement" and killed people when he thought he lost his mate. Mercury was put on a drug program that pushed his animal side deep inside him until he barely had extra abilites but he survived. As part of his job as a Breed enforcer for Sactuary, Mercury is assigned to protect Gloria "Ria" Rodriguez while she does some short term work at Sanctuary. He is being watched closely for a return of feral displacement, which is a problem because when the animal inside him senses Ria it begins to wake up.

Ria Rodriguez is supposed to be at Sanctuary reviewing the spending of funds donated by the Leo. She is actually there to figure out who is selling information about the mating heat and prolonged lifetimes that occur between mated pairs. Ria dresses as a dowdy woman, hiding herself from the world because she thinks if she doesn't attract attention she won't be hurt and she can do her job better. Mercury sees right through her disguise to the more flashy, strong woman inside.

The attraction between Mercury and Ria is instant and powerful but Ria refuses to give into it because she knows Mercury's mate has died so she would always be his second choice. The physical heat between them eventually boils over and they have some insanely hot love scenes. Mercury decides that she is the mate of his heart, no matter that the signs of mating heat are not there despite how much he wishes they were.

Just when Mercury and Ria start to get together, his supposedly dead mate comes back. The consequences of this explode the story, causing Mercury's animal to finally emerge. Mercury is unbelievably sexy once he is finally the powerful Lion Breed he was supposed to be. Secrets that Ria had hidden come alive as well, allowing her to be strong enough to fight for what she wants - and what she wants is Mercury. The girl fight scene at the end was great, I love how Ria took care of the problem herself and didn't hide behind Mercury.

Mercury and Ria's story is now one of my favorite Breed books. The physical heat between them was scorching plus I really felt that they loved each other and belonged together. I enjoyed finding more out about the Leo, Dane and of course Jonas who is really growing on me. Mercury's War is too good to miss, I highly recommend reading this story and the other Breed books.

Breeds 16
Feline Breeds 10
Featured Couple: Mercury (Lion) & Ria (Human?)
Location: Virginia Mountains – Feline Breeds’ base

Being a Breed’s mate is cool because when a couple is experiencing the Mating Heat, their aging process is also delayed. Thus, the mated couple can live many years young and happy. For example Callan & Merinus don’t seem to age at all – although more than 10 years have passed since the day they have mated.
This is a well kept secret between Breeds, but some ruthless people want to steal their secrets and research from the Breeds’ Sanctuary in order to discover the cure for aging.

Ria arrives as an employee of Vanderale Industries. She comes to the Breed Sanctuary to try to crack the code and find the leak.
Mercury will serve as her bodyguard and her helper going around in the Sanctuary. Mercury drives her to the office every morning, takes her back to the cabin every afternoon and stays with her at night. Soon, there will be sexual attraction between them.
Unfortunately there cannot be mating between them, because Mercury already had a mate in the past that was killed in the labs.

Of course our favorite manipulator, Jonas, is also interfering here. Jonas is convinced that the female that was killed in the labs was not Mercury’s mate and that Ria is actually his true mate. Mercury’s and Ria’s pairing was actually another well organized manipulation by Jonas in order to control the representative of the Vanderale industries.

This is another book that after you finish it you are hoping Jonas will find his mate soon and she will make him suffer.

I loved the entire dynamic of the book. Mercury is perfect for Ria. He is just so intense, since he has been created to be the perfect Breed. He can communicate with the lions, but he has lost himself and he is now away from his inner beast. He is so miserable without a mate. Ria will make him whole again.

The book is very important for the series’ fans. A lot of secrets are revealed and new stories are starting to get into motion.

Favorite scene: Mercury sends the lions of the sanctuary to find and protect his Ria.
Important appearances: The Vanderale family and Dane. They have come to stay. I loved learning about the Vanderale family.

I'm dying to get to Lion's Heat, but being a bit compulsive about reading books in order I knew I had to get a few of LL's books on the TBR pile out of the way first. Mercury's War wasn't bad, but it wasn't quite at the level of some of my Breeds favorites (Dawn's Awakening, Elizabeth's Wolf (Breeds, #4), and Soul Deep). I thought the story (except for all the technical stuff--codes, security systems, etc.) was pretty easy to follow (someone's trying to steal secrets of the mating heat and the lack of aging that goes with it from the Breed Sanctuary, and sell it to an outside research lab so they can develop an anti-aging drug--Ria arrives as an employee of Vanderale Industries to try to crack some codes/ interpret security/ computer findings to see if she can find the traitor). I enjoyed the love story between Ria Rodriquez and Breed enforcer Mercury Warrant, but the suspense aspect of the story? Eh. Could have been better--I was waiting for some big traitorous reveal, and was sort of let down in the end. ****smalll spoiler****I knew Dr. Ely couldn't be the baddie, since she's getting her own book, so LL's attempt to throw suspicion her way didn't quite work for me. So I was waiting for the baddie to be some big important character that I'd already met, but that wasn't to be. At least not yet...******

I did like Mercury--I felt bad for him that who he thought was his future mate (and his chance at happiness) had died years ago, and that he would be destined to be alone and not be able to mate and have a family like so many of the Breeds around him were doing. I thought he was rather sexy without being too overbearingly alpha. Loved the description of the part lion, part human Mercury--6'4", muscular, broad shouldered, with long, thick, multi-hued dark hair, slanted amber eyes--the line of the lids black, as though someone had applied the lighest layer of eyeliner; lips just a bit thin, but the lower lip had a tempting fullness at the center. Features that weren't all human or all lion, but savage and male. Yum.

I liked Ria for the most part, although her grouchy attitude and self pity about being the 'orphan girl' (her mother died when she was 6 and she was looked after by the Vanderale (the first 'Leo') family) grated on my nerves from time to time. I thought she and Mercury had a lot in common with their need to fit in and belong, and of their feelings of being on the outside looking in. She had a couple of secrets that surprised me as well. I enjoyed when she finally stood up in the end and fought for what she wanted (and deserved) without running away like she had in the past.

Ria and Mercury together? Rather hot (of course)! Some pretty scorching love scenes, but nothing too kinky. You get the mating heat and the need to have sex all the time, you get the appearance of the 'barb', you get the biting, the marking, the purring, the howl at the moon sex...you get the picture--it's all in this book. And not as much 'sneering' and arguing going on between them as some of the other Breed stories--I was thankful for that. I was getting a little tired of Mercury insisting that Ria was his mate and her denying to herself (and to him) that she was though. Wake up and smell the coffeee, Ria!

There were a few little plot threads left dangling (there may be a coup in the works at Sanctuary), which I'm sure will be wrapped up in the following books. Jonas continues to play a strong supporting role, and I'm trying to pay attention to his scenes so I'll be well prepared when I finally get to "Lion's Heat".

If I had one little wish about this series...I wish that Lora Leigh would put a family tree or something in these books so we can see how all the characters are related. I can never keep track of these things and so many of the characters are related in one way or another that my head spins trying to keep up! I mean Callan, Jonas, Dane, Leo, Ria...all related somehow. Whew!

Fans of this series---I don't think this is one you can skip. A couple of important things were revealed in this one, so it's best if you read it. I think you'll enjoy Ria (and especially) Mercury, and be entertained by this book. 4 stars.

The latest in Lora Leigh's 'Breed' series is "Mercury's War". This story delves deeper into the troubles at Sancturary and the mystery of who is leaking what information to the enemies of the Breeds.

When the lioness Mercury believed was his mate was taken from the labs, he went feral and on a rampage. When he was eventally restrained, he was given drugs to 'cage' his beast. Since that time he has learned control and never allowed his 'other' nature to control him. Now he's faced with a human woman that he burns for like no other. Can he keep control when she denies him?

Ria has a few secrets. One of which is that she's a half breed. Another is that she's at Sanctuary on a secret mission. The last is that she's in love with Mercury. But she will NEVER accept second best and since Breeds mate only once and Mercury lost his, she refuses to give in to her hunger.

Hot sex, hot breeds, and more details regarding the latest plot against all breeds in general and Sanctuary specifically. If you haven't read this series, don't start here. Start at the beginning, and enjoy fanning your way through the backlist of books!!

This is why I love Lora Leigh! WOW - the chemistry between Mercury and Ria is AMAZING. And Mercury himself? OMG - break me off a piece of that! This is going straight to the keeper shelf, 5+ stars. Would def. recommend to any and all Lora Leigh fans, or really anyone else into the paranormal genre. However, I wouldn't recommend beginning the series w/ this book, having the background of the Breeds and knowing and understanding all of their idiosyncrasies is a must to know what's going on w/ mating heat and the likes. But don't worry, they're all worth reading IMO! Enjoy!

The drama! The suspense! The action! The romance! Oh boy, the romance! Mercury’s War by Lora Leigh had me straining my eyes to finish the story as quickly as I could. This is the 16th book in Lora Leigh’s “Breed Series” and in my humble opinion; her books are only getting better with time.

Mercury Warrant is a lion breed that has spent most of his adult life trying to repress the lion inside of him. When he was a young man, Mercury is told that a lioness breed thought to be his mate is dead. He is so enraged by the mere thought of his mate dying; he goes into a killing rampage, sealing his fate as a breed to be feared. When Ria comes to Sanctuary for a job verifying funding, he knows there is something special about her. She tries to hide in the dowdy clothes she wears, but Mercury knows that Ria is hiding. From what, he’s not sure, but he intends to find out.

Ria doesn’t want to crave Mercury, but there is something about him she can’t resist. She knows his mate died years earlier, and she doesn’t want to be his second choice. Whenever she kisses Mercury, she’s dying to taste the mating hormone, and she knows it can never be because she isn’t his mate. Or is she? The feelings they have for each other are so strong and so pure; she can’t believe they aren’t meant for each other. Then the unspeakable happens. The woman Mercury thought to be dead, his “mate”, shows up at sanctuary claiming to want Mercury back. Ria is devastated. Is she truly Mercury’s mate, or was it all in her imagination? Will the two of them work things out, or will the woman claiming to be Mercury’s mate get in the way?

The chemistry between Mercury and Ria is tangible its so thick! They desperately love one another, and have to constantly prove their love with all sorts of obstacles thrown in their way. Mercury’s War by Lora Leigh is one of my favorites in her Breed series, and I can’t wait for the next one to come out!

Mercury’s War is Lora Leigh’s 16th book in the Breeds Series and it’s a really great story. This is one of my favourites so far.

Mecury Warrant is one of the greatest breeds ever created (read Lion Dna!!!) who we have met in previous books has been assigned to work with Ria Rodriguez, the representative of Leo Vanderdale (THE ALPHA LEO of the breed) discover who the traitor is in Sanctuary that is sending secret information on the Breeds to their enemies.
There are a lot of secrets revealed in this book.....Ria’s secret life, the death of Mercury’s mate years ago, the problems with mate heat...you have to read the books to fully understand this phenomena......more about Cassie...gorgeous and interesting....Jonas Wyatt, the head of the Breed Society, and so many more characters we know from before and new ones appearing which I am sure we will get to know soon.

I thought Ria was a fabulous heroine....hiding behind her boring clothes and hairstyle, lived a woman with heart and loads of sensuality and incredible strength....a mate worthy of a lion like Mercury, the ultimate alpha-hero/breed who knows she is his true mate even though there are problems involving this matter.... The banter between each other was really fun....such a lovable couple.
They are unable to keep away from each other.....and wow wow.....the sex scenes...and I mean there are a lot of them...ripping each other’s clothes, doing it in the office...scorching hot!!!!!!!!!! Lora Leigh knows how to write unbelievable sensual, sexy, hot, sizzling sex in her books!!!!!!!!!!

I am fascinated by this magical breed world that the author has created. Part human/animal society that just wants to believe that there is a place for them in this world and that they do indeed have a soul. I love these people....they are so intense, loyal, able to love beyond measure and their closeness as a group is really admirable. There’s suspense, drama, action, romance and sex in these books.

Ooh loved the mention that Ria lives in Johannesburg, South Africa.....that’s my city!!!!!!!!! And this book is definitely in my Favourites shelf of my bookcase

Can’t wait to read my next book on these gorgeous males and their equally beautiful mates.

*Originally read 8/9/11 - 8/11/12*

This is another favorite of mine in the breed series. The circumstances of the mate bond force the characters to build a connection on their own and Mercury and Ria are left to figure out whether or not you can forge a true, lasting relationship without a mate bond.

Because there is no mate bond, Mercury and Ria have the luxury of falling for each other at an easy pace. I've come to realize that the books I like best in this series are the ones that don't conform to the norm. In some way the characters do not find themselves victims of the hormone. They manage to pull back and actually take the time to develop a relationship. I'm not saying I don't enjoy the others, because I do, I just mean that the ones I return to again and again are the ones like that.

I really liked Ria and was pretty amazed by what we discover about her later in the book. I didn't see that coming at all. I also like how we slowly see the truth of her relationship with Dane. It's not as mercenary as I originally started to suspect, based on her mentions of his gifts and manipulation of her. I appreciated that she expounded on that in the end and showed us that It made it all more touching than I originally thought it.

I thought Mercury was a great hero. I felt horrible over what had been done to him because of the feral displacement. I completely understood his frustration over being helpless to make Ria feel better about not being his mate. He totally earned my respect when he pushed to be with her no matter what. He was determined to make love and commitment enough, regardless of what nature dictated.

I really appreciated the longer storyline in this installment. The plot and romance seemed to have a lot longer to develop, and that made it all feel more natural. I also liked getting a closer look at the connection between Jonas, Callan, Dane, and the Leo. Dane and Jonas are definitely intriguing.

When there is a suspicion at the "Sanctuary" that someone is a spy in their own camp they decide to bring in Ria Rodriquez, a talented woman at finding leaks. Ria has grown up in foster homes and never having a "home" until she turns eighteen Dane Vanderale offers her a job, for both him and his father Leo. She finds a family and home with them, feeling like she has found she has a place where she belongs, even though Dane has been quite frustrating as most breed males only can be. When she goes to the "Sanctuary" she meets up with Mercury Warrant who is her bodyguard, and a sensual desire flames up between them, blazing hot. Ria knows that she has a job to do, but at the same time she is drawn to Mercury whose mate died years ago. She is looking for more than a one night stand, she wants a loving relationship and knows her heart will only be broken in the end. Obstacles get thrown in their way that will prove how strong their love really is.

I have realized I should have started reading Lora Leigh many months ago, this having been the first book that I have read of hers, I have found out that she is one of my favorite fantasy romance authors. I had heard such great things about her books, and they were all right. Lora Leigh delivers THE BEST in my book!!!!I found this book to be so sinful it should be awful it was so wonderful to read. I truly loved Ria, she is one of those heroines that stands up to the alpha type male, and stands her ground until of course his kisses melt her senses away, (which I have to say was thoroughly enticing) I also loved the conflict of when his supposed mate comes back to life, and doesn't know which one is really his mate. My heart ached for the position that they both were put in, and how its a classic story of how true love does conquer all obstacles, no matter what they may be. It was a thrilling ride of adventure and passion!!!

Mecury's War- the 16th book in Lora Leigh's popular Breed Series, was a total hit for me. I actually got choked up while reading it, and it's been a long time since a romance novel (albeit PARANORMAL!) has moved me that much.

In Mercury's War we get Mercury's story- a lion breed closest to the lion side than many of his breed brothers & sisters. In Leigh's Breed world, the genetically enhanced hybrids mate for life- if a partner dies then the one left behind suffers- they become "feral"- and never will find another perfect match.

When the feline breed who Mercury believed to be his mate dies years ago while they were still in captivity, he went berserk, tearing humans limb from limb. After that, the scientists who created and enslaved the breeds developed a drug to tame the beast inside him and since then he's lived a half existence- with limited enhanced abilities, so unlike his brethren.

Mercury has given up on ever finding a partner in life. But then he meets Ria, that paper pusher of one Dane Vanderale- a son of the great Leo- the first breed. Unbeknownst to both Mercury and Ria, Ria has touched the caged beast inside of Merc and when the beast begins to awaken, people start running scared. Especially Ely, the trusted doctor who knows all the feline's secrets. When Ely discovers Merc's feral side awakening, she demands he be imprisoned- for the safety of the pride.

But things are not what they seem, and Ria finds herself defending the strange breed who both attracts and frightens her. She knows that he will never be truly hers and that if she lets him- he will break her world apart- but another game's afoot at Sanctuary, the feline breed compound, and it will take Ria to suss it out and save not only Merc, but the entire clan.

Like I said earlier, I LOVED this one. Mercury is an awesome alpha hero, both possessive and tender, and Ria is heart-wrenching in her vulnerability. But she is no shrinking wallflower and when what she truly is comes to the front everything else- including Mercury- takes a backseat to her innate strength!

Many of leigh's other series I can't get into, but the breed series just gets better and better, imo. In MW not only do we get a touching love story, we also get to see the other characters we know and love (JONAS!) and a kickbutt suspense plot.

I'm giving this one a 5 out of 5! How could I not?

Disclaimer:

"See, here's the problem...I have a love/hate relationship with the Breed books. I really need more plot than porn sex and I was ready to cross this series off my list but my vbff, V, told me to give her four favorite books a chance and I'm glad I listened to her."

So that's what I said when I read Dawn's Awakening and I'm still glad I listened to her.

While this book certainly has a whole espionage tale with someone stealing information and who knows what else, the heart of the story is about Mercury and Ria. Mercury supposedly mated with someone else while he was in the labs and they were killed. He then went crazy and had to be put on rage reducing drugs which messed with his animal. As Ria always points out, "You're supposed to be the nice Breed." and that's what he's become until Ria shows up. Not that he isn't nice, but she makes his animal come out to play.

I really enjoyed Mercury. I don't know why but there is just something about him. Now Ria is another matter. I just never liked her. Sure when everything happened, I felt sorry for her and I thought maybe she was coming around. But then we find out about her and the "B" is back. Too Bad.

Another part I really enjoyed was all the Breeds coming together, especially when The Leo and his family showed up. I would've liked more of him but at least we got to know more about Dane. I got such a kick out of all the brothers harassing each other and hopefully there will be more. I was also really intrigued by Lawe and Rule.

Yes, there still is the over the top sex but I don't know, it's not bothering me as much. Oh no ... maybe I'm getting used to it!

I did love all the emotional drama. I thought it was a great set up with the prior "mating" and with Ria fighting her feelings. I think LL does a good job putting people together. I keep trying to figure out who is going to be with who in the future books (like Dane!).

My Giggle Moment:

Every time, every single time, something would happen, Callan, Kane and Jonas would come rushing in. Made me start wondering where they were hiding??!!

Favorite line:

"I say, when Mercury arrives, we just pretend we're not here." Lawe tipped back his whiskey and swallowed in a single drink. "Stay real quiet. Don't make eye contact."

When the scientists and trainers laughed as they told him his potential mate was dead, Mercury Warrant went berserk and the laughers died violently. More than ten years later Mercury still resented his own existence, that he was different from the other breeds. He didn't fit, he coped. He didn't have his lion, he wouldn't feel mating heat.

Dr. Ely warned Jonas that assigning Mercury to Vanderale's auditor, Ria Rodriguez was a mistake. Ely argued Mercury was a danger to himself and everyone at Sanctuary, there were sign of the same feral displacement that fueled his killing rampage when his mate died. Jonas ended the argument by countering she was over reacting and Mercury could be the first breed to have two mates.

Mercury the man only seemed unaffected in Ria's presence, Mercury the lion looked up, sniffed and purred knowing he'd be loose soon since his mate had arrived. Ria's scent convinced Mercury he wanted mating heat and he wanted to belong with and to her. The moment Mercury's flesh was visible to her eye line Ria wished she'd worn something prettier as her girl parts fluttered.

Working for the Leo wasn't always easy, working with Dane never was and this was Dane's secret project. Ria reasoned she'd tamped down her secret femininity to avoid the pointed end of resentment, if others saw her as a threat she'd never be able to get her task done. As Ria worked on her project, she and Mercury move closer to the sexy lion-breed bodyguard covering her body with his own.

This outing is deceptively layered and Mercury's lion was sly enough in his musings to be a separate and distinct character in a small but pivotal role. Mercury's portrayed confused angry and betrayed very well and Ria was sometimes irritating but not unpleasant. Ria's work uncovered a new plot as two council driven villains were introduced while Dane spent time at Sanctuary and proved how much he and Jonas were alike.

Complicated. A lot of families and relations were thrown around in this one and I finally had to right down who was related to keep it straight. Also, the Breed hierarchy became more complicated than I was interested in knowing...not a good thing.

The "games" that were referred to--repeatedly--that Dane and Ria played were silly. I didn't get the "game" part. The secret(s) Ria kept from others didn't seem like it should have been a secret to me. I didn't get it. Why she dressed the way she did seemed like a pitiful excuse. The way she was a royal bitch in the morning didn't have me warming up to her in any way. Her character: throwing fits, a lot of anger, then throwing herself at Mercury...I didn't like it. She needed to grow the heck up!

Mercury's character was okay. It took me awhile to follow the brief glimpses into his inner animal and the suppression of same. Mercury and Ria argued ALL THE TIME, up to the very end. Ugh!

Found up to around page 100 to be very slow. The suspense was good, but once again, too complicated. Just throw out those "sci-fi" made-up words like a Star Trek movie and talk about complicated surveillance and tracking equipment like I really care...

Thought it was silly how Ria was scanning the files looking for coding while threatening Sanctuary with cutting off their funding. All the backstabbing and heated confrontations by all members got on my nerves.

In the midst of tracking a traitor(s), Mercury takes Ria clothes shopping...o-kay. Frustrated me. All Ria's exasperated retorts got old.

Man did I get sick and tired of Ely's temper-tantrums, too. Clearly, Jonas and Callon have a tenuous hold on power at Sanctuary. Throw in the mysterious Alaiya (other mate for Mercury) and all her annoying traits had me rolling my eyes.

#16 Breed series - One Star

This exciting & sexy series is one of my absolute favorites, but this one was a huge disappointment.

Ria, the heroine, is just a #itch. She's so insecure, so annoying, just an angry and thoroughly unlikeable character. I mean, we're talking throw-the-book-at-the-wall type dislike of a character. If I read one more time "poor little me, I grew up an orphan" ... I didn't even want to keep reading this book. Fine, make a character an orphan, but don't beat the reader over the head with it! Yech!

The nonsense about Ria's clothes, and the "bling" was awful. Good God.

The writing ... it seemed like a different writer took a Lora Leigh draft and messed with it. The constant jostling for authority throughout the book and power plays went beyond annoying, and into This Book Sucks territory. I mean, even when two Breeds said "hello, good morning", there was verbal sparring, nitpicking and stick-it-to-the-other-person" crap.

The "games" with Dane was so badly defined and made NO FREAKING SENSE. Dane, Ria and Leo are adults, so WTH?? *shakes head* The rationale (actually, the lack thereof) for Ria's being at Sanctuary -- the real reason -- the secrecy -- made NO SENSE. I am VERY sad to say, Mercury's War teeters on the verge of the What A Waste of Trees scale.

Mercury was a sexy and likeable character and the sex was hot. But the plot, writing, and most characters were so BAD that even Mercury and the steamy sex can't begin to make up for it. I just wanted this book to END.

Coyote's Mate is en route, and I so hope Lora's back her usual thrilling writing.

Lora Leigh Fans:

Lions Heat, #20 Breed series, is showing up on www.goodreads.com *dance* -- Jonas's story - ha. Boy am I anxious to see Jonas get his comeupannce (sp) for all his evil ways! So far no release date or other details.

Wow just as good as the others I have read from her. Actually I think this is one of my favorites from the author. Just really intense and the sex was nuclear.

Enforcer Mercury Warrant is said to be the greatest Breed ever created, more beast than man. Unfortunately, the beast had been drugged into oblivion years ago, after Mercury's enraged violence after the death of his mate.

He's been off the drugs for years now, but the advantages of his unique genetic makeup are long gone and so is the beast...Until Gloria "please call me Ria" Rodriguez shows up in Sanctuary with the mission to evaluate if the Leo's money is well spent.

The paper-pusher act is just a cover, though, and Ria is really there to discover who's been selling Breed secrets to a pharmaceutical company. And despite her obvious attraction to Mercury, she's determined her stay at Sanctuary will be strictly business related. She wants it all, but since he's lost his true mate, she knows there will always be something missing...But Mercury's long-suppressed beast has another agenda and both Mercury and Ria will soon learn there is more to the mating heat than mere genetics.

Hell, yeah! This was one heck of a ride of a book (does this even make sense?). It had everything I'm looking for in a book and more. There was drama (some serious drama in fact), wonderful characterization, great suspense, two perfect leads, and page-burning scenes.

I loved Ria. IMO, she is the epitome of a perfect heroine. Both strong and vulnerable, down-to-earth and dreamy, selfish and selfless all in one tight little package with some serious bitchiness in the morning. She took a while to "get it", but it was worth the wait, since she never whined, but shone with a quiet acceptance that was almost humbling...And when she let loose her inner animal. Oh boy. I would've loved to see that cat fight. You go, girl!

Ms. Leigh struck gold with Mercury Warrant. For a man with such a dangerous and violent beast inside, he was (almost) the perfect opposite of his animal side. Quiet, gentle, almost unaware of his own worth and importance in the community and in the eyes of his friends.
It was bitter-sweet reading about his struggle with the lack of mating heat between him and Ria, how he wanted for something to be there, and when he finally realized the most important lesson, that it mostly is all about heart, I melted. And when the lion made his triumphant comeback - at the most inopportune moment, if I may say so - whew! Tinglies!...It also cleared up the "inconsistency" from Tanner's Scheme. You gotta embrace you inner beastie for the mating mojo to work its magic. Interesting.

The suspense was an added bonus in this book. It was so simply done it was quite easy for the reader to point the finger at the wrong Breed. And it made it quite easy to "hate" the said Breed despite all the support and kindness said Breed showed in the previous books. The mind is a fickle thing, I guess.

I also liked the small glimpsed in Jonas Wyatt's tender side. First the little info on him playing matchmaker in Dawn's Awakening. Wasn't that sweet? I turned into a manga drawing with little hearts in my eyes at that one. And then in the epilogue he showed us for sure that despite his manipulative tendencies he's a true FGP at heart. ;)

A definite keeper, close second to Dawn's Awakening (that's still my favorite, can't top that one), and owner of My Favorite Scene in the Series Award for…

He walked away from them all then and allowed the animal driving him freedom. It had been confined, so deeply hidden within him that even he hadn’t known it still lived.

It wasn’t confined any longer, and it was going for its mate.

As he stepped outside the mansion and moved for the Harley, he inhaled deeply.

He could smell them now. Knew where they were. Each living, four-legged lion that wandered the grounds, protecting its two-legged cousins, following them.

He roared out into the night, the animal and the man announcing their presence, their strength. And the calls came back to him. A symphony of animal screams, roars that filled the mountain, the acknowledgment from the animals that all moves to be near him, in triumph.

He was aware of the Breeds guarding outside, watching him warily now. The sounds of the lions called back to him, roaring out their greeting, their challenge, the echo of the fury they heard inside him.

He roared out again, filling the night with a sound he’s never known he possessed. His head tipped back, rage and triumph and the call for his mate tearing from vocal cords that were now more animal than human.

And the animals answered. He felt their response, felt them moving toward his destination. They were his pride and they would protect what was his. His woman. His mate. Their alpha female by choice and by nature.

The Breed that brought him the Harley stood back, wariness and respect filling his gaze as Mercury strode to him.

The Breed was awed by the sight of him. Eyes so blue they could rival a summer sky, the thick mane of hair flowing back from his savage features, his shoulders appearing broader, his body larger, than ever before.

The Lion Breed male saw something that both terrified and awed him, because this vision was a true Breed. The pure merging of lion and human. And he was enraged. That roar had been one of pure fury, and in it, it had held a message. A message so primal, so demanding, that the Breed himself nearly followed it.

Protect Mercury’s mate.

This is one of my favorite books!
I have read this book many times and will be reading it many more times in the future. The entire series rates up there with Anne McCaffrey’s dragon riders of Pern. You can start with any book in the series and feel like you know exactly where you are at within the world of the breeds. Mercury and Ria both pull at my heart strings. They have been hurt terribly in the past and keep a tight rein on their feelings and actions to protect themselves. Outside forces may be working against them, but when they come together the HEA is epic.

A long time ago Mercury Warrant thought he lost his mate. When he found out about the death of the young lioness, he went on a bloody and brutal rampage and the scientists had to inject him with gene therapy to calm the feral beast within. While it may have solved the problem of his rage, it silenced the animal within him, hampering his Breed capabilities. He's been living with the handicap quite well, until Ria Rodriquez walked into his life and now his hormones are all over the place. Ria is at Sanctuary to quietly investigate the possibility of a leak. Someone is selling information about the Breeds' ability to stop aging and that type of information in the wrong hands could prove deadly. Mercury is assigned as her bodyguard and while she's rooting through the files, his animal is slowly awakening and starting to stalk it's prey. This time the animal within Mercury has scented it's true mate and it means to claim her, slowly and carefully, but when Ria bends over for some papers, all reasoning is lost and he all but forces himself on her. Their passion explodes and it's forceful and breathtaking and unfortunately, in full view of the security cameras. The last thing the Pride needs is a loose cannon and with his violent history, he's looked at with suspicion, but is it really his feral side coming out, or is it his newly awakened animal, finally unleashed and ready to merge with the man? When his animal side finally does blend with the man in a pure mating of genetics, Mercury and Ria's relationship is cemented, even with the arrival of the woman thought to he his mate from long ago. With that woman dogging their heels and not knowing who is friend or foe within Sanctuary, all they can do is indulge in the glory of their mating heat and hope to survive the latest threat to the Breeds.

I really, really liked this book. Mercury's War is my new favorite of the Breeds books because I just loved everything about it. Mercury was an extremely hot and dominating presence and while he was extremely sexy, he was also funny and very intelligent. Ria was a fascinating enigma and I enjoyed the sparks between them. She presents herself to the world as one thing, while inside, she's an entirely different woman and Mercury instantly senses her hidden feminine self. He forces her to bring out her inner animal and the methods he uses are not subtle. Nor is his sexuality. When he made up his mind to have her, Mercury didn't hold anything back. Also, Lora Leigh seems to have an affinity towards males in leather pants. Noah Blake and Clint McIntire to name a few and everytime it seemed to fall flat for me. I just didn't get the appeal, until Mercury walked across the page dressed in leather pants and suddenly, I saw the appeal. Oh, yeah. My only complaint would be that Mercury's animal side has a personality that seems slightly stalkerish. It's inner ramblings came across as the ramblings of a serial killer and I didn't know what to make of it. Also there is a stupid typo that states Taber, not Tamber tries to kidnap David which I thought should have been noted and fixed before release.

I highly recommend this newest book in the Breeds series. It's sexy and fun and there was enough going on behind the scenes to make my mouth water for future books. Lora Leigh has created an extremely compelling and seductive character in Mercury and she's paired him with a more than worthy heroine.

I rate this a 4.5.

Description from publisher:

Someone has been slipping the Sanctuary’s secure information to a pharmaceutical company. Now it’s up to Ria Rodriguez to pose as a clerk and uncover the leak. Yet she has no idea of the danger she’s about to encounter—or the passion she’s about to ignite in one of the greatest Breeds ever created.

My review:

Mercury's War is erotic, luscious, and sexy much like Mercury himself. There's intrigue, adventure, and romance. Absolutely love Mercury, one can't help it. Hot, sexy read.

Lora Leigh's books are now a part of my must read shelf.

A break from a series can do wonders.

Ria was an outstanding female character. I loved that she was independent yet she knew when to give in. It was a pleasure to read about her and her insecurities.

Merc knew what he wanted and he went after it. Two outsiders finding solace in each in other. I liked it!

I really disliked the fact that his friends didn't have his back when Ely implied that he was going feral. I actually felt heated over it, but I needn't have worried. Ria came out swinging in a room full of powerful men.

One qualm I had was with Ely. The author let that go on a bit too long and made the characters in the book look foolish for not figuring out that Ely never acted that extreme. A fail all around

ohhh my gawd did the plot thicken in this one. I as so saddened for Mercury, hurt for Ria, scared of Ely and just couldn't understand why Jonas was sooo stupid.. well yes I do because he's Jonas. Ria has been assigned to go over the files and the money that has been flowing into Sanctuary from Dane's company, he wants an accounting of everything so Jonas assigns Mercury to Ria to help her/ hinder her in anyway possible.

Mercury is considered a surviving mate as his mate was killed during the rescues of the labs.
Despite that Merc has begun to have feelings but no sings of mating heat with Ria. They have an explosive chemistry and for some reason that worries Ely, she has become obsessed with studying Merc and as the weeks progress her behaviour goes from scientific curiosity to full blown obsession.

This story made me tear up because Ria wanted so badly to be accepted and loved and mated, she looked for the signs however they weren't there and each time she thought she got one it broke her heart a little bit more. Everybody is lying in this one, no one is quite who or hat they seem. Since the revelation that Jonas and Callan are really brothers, and we already know all about the familial bond with the Leo, they have been going crazy with Dane. I really felt for Ria, because we have all loved men ho we want to be the right ones who aren't the best for us.

We get secrets galore that keep flowing up from the closets, more traitors are outed, a mad scientist is captured, and just general chaos as the enemies continue to strike at the heart of the Breed world. I absolutely loved the character development within this book, Merc was hot, funny, compassionate and such a worthy partner, because he tried to be more for Ria even though mother nature didn't seem to be cooperating. Even though this on was character driven the action was not missing, we get bombshell after bombshell the closer we get to the end and some I didn't see coming at all.

Merc and Ria had enemies coming in from all sides, and so did the compound. With Ely's obsession gaining ground against Merc and threatening his freedom, a surprise that wasn't a good one comes back from the past. And this is when we really meet the animal that is Merc, because he totally becomes even more that he has been in a long time and even Jonas wasn't prepared.

Reading the Leo's history you can start to see why he fights differently from Callan and Jonas, and why he despise their judgment, being Prime having to eeek out a way to live with the entire Council gunning for you, your mate and your family when the world wasn't ready to hear about or protect the Breeds had to have sucked. I once read a book by Laurell K Hamilton in which the character Merry was a Faery Princess who was being hunted, and her bodyguard remarked that all their enemy needed as one day of luck, they needed to survive every attempt being made while their enemy needed just one successful attack and it would be all over for them. This is the lives of the Breeds, those people know are Breeds and those that are like Cassie and are hybrids and hidden. They always have to be on watch, and their enemies only need them to slip once to claim victory. I can't imagine the pain the Leo and his mate have felt on having to live with their choices, knowing so many suffer and not being able to aid them.

For the first time that I can remember we get to see Jonas as more than the evil dictating manipulator he is. So many things happen that advance the story beyond just mates meeting, and the reunions of the old mates coming back to Sanctuary. We learn more about the key players in the plot again the Breeds, we see so many of the traitors get caught and Jonas is brought to his knees.

I really enjoyed this one as it really brought me back into the world and made it worth reading again. Very erotic especially between Ria & Merc. I just loved their banter and the way they pushed each other. Ria was holding back because of past experiences and Merc was held back because of the past; it was interesting to watch them learn to move forward together. The last half of the book really packed a hell of a punch as things just unraveled .

★★★★☆
