My Mate Is a a Feline Gentleman #1
My Mate Is a Feline Gentleman, Volume 1
From the earliest days of his memory, Toushirou has never known warmth or love. Born an omega in Japan, where they are treated as inferior, he’s gotten used to being a mere play thing for his masters. When he’s hired as a servant for the beast folk diplomat Alex, he fears the worst―but to his surprise, Alex is appalled by the treatment of omegas in Japan. For the very first time, Toushirou learns of kindness from his feline master, and little by little, their feelings toward each other begin to change…

Overall the romance in this was sweet. The story surrounding it was pretty heavy though. Omegas are treated horribly in this world, and the abuse the main character suffers is hard to read. Alex was wonderful though, willing to do anything to protect Toushirou. So while this definitely wasn't as fluffy as it may seem, it was still a strong read.

This was so incredibly heartwarming. It was giving sex worker with a heart of good vibes, which I enjoy. Why? Say it with me! Because sex work is real work!
It’s an Omegaverse story, which I have been really getting into lately, but to top it off, it’s with a cat-type creature, so kinda monster romance? Either way, I loved it!
I just don’t love that so many books I’ve read that feature Omegas also have S.A. I understand the thought process behind it, Omega pheromones and all, but that trope is getting old in the books I read.
Other than that, it was puuuuurfect! Get it! Did you see what I did?

TW: This book contains explicit rape scenes. Read with care.
I haven't really read much A/B/O that I loved, yet it's still a genre that manages to be pretty hit or miss for me. A lot of the tropes of this genre usually just don't speak to me, as they tend to be pretty assault-heavy. However, this book was definitely closer to a hit than a miss for me, even if it still didn't 100% hit the mark.
I feel like you can't go wrong with this type of setup: someone who has always been hurt and spit on by the world, meeting their one person who finally treats them gently and vows to protect them. It's both sweet and compelling, and that's the relationship that Alex and Toushirou have. Toushirou has had nothing but a rough go of it, so watching him slowly blossom alongside someone who actually cares about him and his well-being, is certainly precious!! Not to mention, Alex, the Feline Gentleman in question, is hard not to love, as he's pretty much one of two upstanding people in a story filled with totally evil jerks. He and Toushirou just work in this story, so it's pretty easy to get on board with.
I also think that the art gets passing marks -- not incredible, but well done nonetheless. I do enjoy the characters' designs and I can never get enough of Taisho-era clothing. My favorite part of the cat people's designs are their wide-ridged noses, they're so intelligent and adorable! It's definitely an interesting art style, I give it that.
However, overall, this book just isn't quite perfect for me. I see a lot of potential in this story. I think that Asanae was definitely trying to do something new in tying A/B/O and Beastfolk genres together, while also trying to flesh out the worldbuilding in a unique way. But sometimes I find that the attempt at worldbuilding actually gets in the way of our protagonists spending time together. I would have liked to see more of the two of them just being themselves together, without there being such a prevalent emphasis on plot and conflict. You get a sense for what Toushirou and Alex's characters are like, but as they are now, I think that they're both a bit flat and obvious -- less like people, more like plot devices in a story.
Sometimes, I think that romance manga treats it as a given that the characters will fall in love, so they don't spend enough time fleshing out the "hows" and "whys" of that. Even Alex admits that he's absolutely not sure if he loves Toushirou for him or for his pheromones, which says a lot about this plot. I hope that in future volumes, there's a bigger emphasis on character development.
TL;DR: Gets the job done, but could use some polish. I applaud the mangaka's attempt at doing something new, but I think the story gets in its own way at times.

What a nice surprise this was! Yes, it's a furry omegaverse romance, but it's also about finding someone who loves you for who you are not what the world says you are. I'm not sure it merits the M rating, though it does have some sexual assault, but this is another case where I'm glad work pushed me out of my comfort zone.

okay, I went into this blind, literally didn't even read the synopsis, and I did not expect this story to be so dark. i thought this was going to sweet and fluffy and while it had a happy ending, I would not consider this a light read. if you have some knowledge of alphas/omegas though, then you were probably not surprised by where this story went. consider me flabbergasted though.
the relationship between Toushirou and Alex though was very sweet and progressed naturally, imo. I know other readers said that they thought it moved a bit fast for the degree of trauma Toushirou had, but I didn't think that at all. I think Alex was very kind and patient with Toushirou which led to the developing feelings between the two of them. Toushirou finally felt safe and comfortable in the relationship and the environment Alex built for them which is something they have never felt before.
I enjoyed this and will definitely check out more by this author if they choose to publish more!

This was a surprisingly good story! I picked it up mostly because it’s such an obnoxious cover and title, but there was more to it than that.
My Mate is a Feline Gentleman in many ways is a story of a man trying to overcome his trauma. Having grown up as an omega in a society that does not value them (leading to repeated rape), Toushirou has no reason to be trusting when he’s forced to go work for Alex. Still, with time, he sees that Alex has no intention of taking advantage of him and highly respects him. It slowly builds into a surprisingly sweet romance between the two.
I don’t have much else to say about this, but I’m definitely glad I picked it up. It’s definitely a lot more serious than I thought it would be. (Again, serious trigger warnings for rape) But the romance was genuinely heartwarming. Plus, I’m omegaverse trash. It was more likely to be up my alley than not 😂😂😂

Surprisingly wholesome? The story carries a bit more weight than I expected, delving into the treatment of omegas in this setting and how Alec sees it as an outsider. I enjoyed it, and will probably pick up the continuation volumes eventually.

This is why I’m so hesitant to read omega stories. Attempted rape isn’t cute and it’s always filled with that and forced sex slaves and I just can’t do it. The romance between the two mc’s wasn’t even worth the ride either

I enjoyed this manga. It was well written, had a solid storyline, & had lovely artwork. I really liked the way the feline people were drawn. I haven't seen it done in that exact way before. The rest of the artwork is done well too. There are a couple short side type stories in here as well. They all involve the main characters, but aren't exactly part of the main story. Though they do add to it well. You learn a little bit more about their backstory threw them. There is a sweet one about the candy jar as well.
The story takes place in an alternate time line in the country of Japan. There are different types of beast people, alpha, omega, & humans as well. This is the story of an omega servant who has been mistreated all his life. His mother was the mistress of the leader of the family. When she died her omega son was forced to take her place. He was kept in a shed with bars to keep him inside. He never thought he would see any kind of freedom. When the leader of the family died and the new master took over. Things did change some but not for the better. The omega servant was forced into a brothel in the red light district. One day the new master takes the omega to a new household. Where he is to serve a new master for awhile. This household is of a feline beast person. The beast people have also been mistreated by society in the past. They are now supposed to be more equal to the humans, but there is still a good deal of prejudice. This feline master treats the omega very well, & the omega is shocked by this good treatment. He keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop and a negative side of the feline master to show itself. That doesn't seem to happen though. Slowly they develop a friendship that starts to become more for them both. It is not very slow moving and does go a decent pace. There is a bit of drama & some issues do arise. That they have to deal with. The two learn to trust each other and start to become a couple. It does end in a happily for now.
I would definitely read something else by this author. I enjoyed this story very much and if it sounds like something you'd like give it a try.

TRIGGERS : mentions of rape. Mostly off-page, but there's a constant thread of rape everywhere - child rape, servant rape, attempted rape, gang rape, rape as revenge, rape as punishment
~
This was a surprisingly lovely story, with great chemistry between the MC's and gorgeous artwork.
Toushirou is unwanted - an omega, the son of a "whore" *insert eye roll* - and looked down on by society.
Alex is a Nyartigian - a cat person, essentially - and a gentleman.
The implication is that Alex is British, while Toushirou is Japanese. There's a surprising criticism of Japan, for the way they treat Omegas - both in terms of them mistreating other humans, and not safeguarding the vulnerable.
Toushirou's life has been hell - constantly being used and abused because he's an omega - until he's sold to a new owner, with the implication being that he's to seduce Alex for his previous owner, though the why or how it benefits the previous owner isn't really explained.
Alex is lovely! He's smart, strong and wonderful in every way. He takes care of Toushirou in ways that no one else ever has. He also has a best friend Rodney who - unlike some other stories of this type - looks down on Toushirou only because he's obviously been sent to tempt Alex to jeopardise the friendly relations between humans and Nyartigian's. Rodney is protective, cautious and yet he admits his mistakes, he's willing to trust Alex's judgement and accept Toushirou.
Putting the undercurrent of rape aside - as I do see the plot point of including it - the relationship between Toushirou and Alex was adorable! I'd like to read the next two, but as they're a connected volume, I'll wait until I have more time.

I'm not sure how I feel about this story. More 3.5 stars than 4. I liked it, but I felt like it was rushed. If this were a series, or even just two books, it would be that much better. I wanted to know more about Alex/Alec. I wanted to know about the world he came from. I wanted to see more interactions with Toushirou, especially as they got to know each other. It was like... he had one heat, and then it skipped to several later. But even just small snippets of their life together would have been nice. And then to wrap it up rather neatly? I kind of wanted to see what would happen with Toushirou were around more of the beastfolk, and not just Rodney. They also made it seem like everything would be terrible if people found out, and yet Rodney had two pages of yelling and that was it. The art style itself is interesting. It's unique, and Alex and Rodney are drawn well, but the humans weren't as well done. Still worth a read if you like omegaverse and want something different, thought the omega concepts here were much different.

Toushirou is an omega and treated like filth and a sex slave for it. Then he’s made a servant to Alex, a diplomat of a feline race who seems immune to his omega pheromones. But it turns out that’s not the case.
This was a sweet story at heart, with some scenes of sexual violence in the mix, all the more pronounced because the one explicit scene between Toushirou and Alex was sort of skipped, as if the author had shied away of making the most of the feline character. The friendship between the men was nice, but it was too rushed. All in all, a slightly unsatisfying read.
Illustrations were good. This seemed to be a stand-alone, but if there are more volumes, I might read them.
I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

The good: The story is solid romance, it has a progression, there's some sprinkling of sex here and there but nothing relevant on the explicit side. Characterization is good. The story goes beginning to the end without being forced, and even the worldbuilding is consistent.
The bad: the art is...well, it tends to make zipperbacks out of the furry characters. Despite the main animals being cats, their drawn so that their faces look humanish with a truffle instead of a nose, and their attitude is far from being that animal/human mix I'd expect from the story.
All in all, it's sweet, cute and dramatic as I wanted it.

catman and omegaverse ✔️✔️ what a combo
ngl i wasn’t expecting the omegaverse aspect of it but that’s cuz i didn’t read the synopsis lmao
anyway, i think it was a lot for this one volume to cover yk, there were so many elements that were brought in that the story only touched upon them shallowly. im guessing there’s gonna be more development in upcoming volumes. overall, it was a decent read tho 👍😔 i liked the characs and their budding relationship. ahh not much else to say ig lol

This book was such an interesting read. Although it was probably the average length of a monogram, it kind of felt like a slow burn in the romance department. It did not get spicy until 90% in unless you count the kids that occurs midway through the book. I like the relationship between the two characters here and I’m very curious to know who the next two books will be about. I assume it will not be about this couple

This was such a cute read. I really loved our two leads, especially the Feline Gentleman Alex. They both cared for each other so much and made my heart flutter. It is a dark read, but that added to the story for me.
Highly recommend this omegaverse.

Oh, no. Am I a curmudgeon? Yes, kind of. If I'd read this at 15, I'd probably have found it endearing; however, I've read a lot of omegaverse, a lot of BL, and a lot of manga in general now. Bland art, a very simplistic storyline with very little drama, and weak worldbuilding smashing furry races and omegaverse into one. It was alright, but that's all - alright.

This was kind of cute, but idk the cat features kind of freak me out. The toe beans and them tongue kissing with his cat tongue and his little cat teeth. The furry body and the side part hair cut. I keep reading these beastman bls and never know how to feel about them lol. I do like it enough that I'll pick up the sequel at some point.
November 17, 2023
Am I a furry?...no...am I? Lol...No, but seriously, this was a lot cuter than I was expecting. Yeah the story was kinda generic, but I liked the twist of a different species in the mix of the omegaverse.
July 13, 2025
Plain and simple, the book is very cliche. The only reason why I was interested in it was the feline gentleman because of his design. The human character felt very much like a damsel in distress. The art style is mediocre and while the book isn’t the worst, it certainly isn’t the best either.
