Neste pequeno livro (literalmente pois tem apenas 45 páginas), o diabo, em pessoa, se assim se pode considerar, propõe-se, através de uma carta aberta aos leitores, fazer a sua defesa do que ele chama de anos de invocação injusta e indevida da sua pessoa.

E o resultado expressa-se num conjunto de ideias onde a ironia e por vezes a frieza dos factos vão dando razão ao sr. Diabo.
