While a lot of the ending was rather anticlimactic, the air of mystery and menace around Liakoutine was marvelous, and the way in which Nizet never directly confirmed him s being of supernatural origin is just the sort of thing I long for in more vampire fiction. It's also a fascinating look into Romania during the Russo-Turkish war (or at least a young Belgian woman's perception of it).
