Provides the first broad introduction to feminist work in classical studies. Including lesbian theory, black feminist theory, American and French feminist theory, classics will never be the same again.
As someone new to the classics and feminist theory, some of the chapters are at times difficult to read without searching for outside explanations of the material being discussed. The chapters authored by Shelley Haley, Bella Zweig, and Peter Rose were the most accessible given my prior learning in intercultural studies and German studies. This book is certainly a helpful resource for anyone starting their studies in feminist theory or the classics, but it requires some basic background in the classics before diving in. I also have to wonder how far beyond this book feminist theory may have progressed since its writing in the early 90’s. Full of useful references to resources for further reading.
