This wandering bon vivant and former Malaysian exile does not (yet) have his own TV show, choosing instead to record his amazing adventures in writing. This is the most wonderful book by a Malaysian I've ever read! =D Not that I've read much, but Hishamuddin Rais's writing is very unique in that he alludes often to Malaysian culture and always compares and contrasts with things in London and Paris (As well as other places he's travelled to, but mainly those two cities). I've never read works in English with that quality so far. It's very classy, I must say.

What's really enjoyable is his tongue-in-cheek humour. It works so well that often, you'l

TAPAI: Travels & Guilty Pleasures of a Fermented Malaysian ini menghidangkan erti kembara sensual makanan kepada liberalis-marxisis-agonistik-eksistensialis seperti Hishamuddin Rais.

TAPAI more than a foodie travelogue but his worldview vis-à-vis his nostalgic experience as persona non grata running away post Baling demonstration. He drink his guilty pleasure like a fish in the water but I believe he stopped drinking and smoking altogether nowadays. Alas the man know his drink and food. Reading TAPAI away from Malaysia eliciting my gustatory center secreting my salivary glands. As a self professed agnostic, Isham surely try to enjoy his life to the fullest. Travelling hundre ...more

this book is awesome. other than the fact that he likes wine and beer, i think a true malaysian can really appreciate reading this, because we all love the same food.

but this book is not only about food, it's about food and things that associate with it. food and volunteerism, food and post-tsunami tragedy, food and pendatang asing, and so much more. i feel like i have to take a road trip with my friends and search for all the amazing restaurant (warung) he mentioned in kedah.

Funny, irreverent and makes you want to go and visit the food stalls that Hisham features in this book. He likes wine, though, and he never has a meal without at least something alcoholic. Even when he has satay, he drinks.

Borrowed from a friend, tukartiub blog most loyal follower. Reading this book remind me of once a boy with baju melayu and sarung pelikat went to Beat & Music store asking for Carlos Santana cassette, out of curiosity (plus peer influence) I pick up this book.

How should i say Tapai is in between a guilty pleasure to read and an artsy sort of manneken pis.

Great book about travelling. But maybe it would be better if minus the high-class restaurant reviews. And I'm missing something; where's the Ramly burger??
