Tyrell #2

Bronxwood

Rate this book
The acclaimed author of TYRELL and KENDRA returns to PUSH to continue Tyrell's astonishing story. Tyrell's father is just out of jail, and Tyrell doesn't know how to deal with that. It's bad enough that his brother Troy is in foster care and that his mother is no help whatsoever. Now there's another thing up in his face, just when he's trying to settle down. Tyrell's father has plans of his own, and doesn't seem to care whether or not Tyrell wants to go along with them. Tyrell can see the crash that's coming -- with his dad, with the rest of his family, with the girls he's seeing -- but he's not sure he can stop it. Or if he even wants to.

I can't tell you how excited I was to find out there was a 2nd book that followed Tyrell. And this book lives up to the first one.

Tyrell is living in the Bronxwood projects with his best friend and his best friend's brother. They sell drugs but Tyrell has always tried to make an honest living by using his jailed father's DJ equipment at parties. But when his dad gets out of prison, Tyrell has to figure out how to continue DJing on his own.

There's also a lot of other things happening in the book - Tyrell's struggle with his father about who the real "man" of the house is, his brother Troy is still in foster care, his mom's affairs and, of course, girl problems.

Booth writes so incredibly well in Tyrell's voice. It's genuine, honest and heartbreaking. You root for him no matter if he does something well or something questionable. I hope she writes more books with him as the protagonist because they are an absolute wonder!

Coe Booth has been one of my very favorite storytellers ever since I read Tyrell. Kendra also was magnificent. Bronxwood blew me away. Every word coming from Tyrell's mind rings so true. I could be walking in my neighborhood, hearing 16-yr old kids talk. Coe never judges her characters. She lets them be who they are. She never preaches or tries to teach a lesson. She lets you decide for yourself whether or not the characters are on the right track. Whether or not you "like" what the characters are up to, you love them. You feel for them in such an immediate way. You laugh with them a lot too--the humor is so great, relayed by a wise soul of a writer. Coe's ear for dialogue, her characters' voices--all remarkable. And she gives the characters a fast-placed plot to live in. Bronxwood is devastatingly awesome, an absolutely phenomenal read. I loved this book. -Paul Griffin, NYC, 10-15-2011

Just back from Atlanta where he made some money DJing at parties, Tyrell returns to New York as his father is being released from jail. He immediately becomes involved in all sorts of romantic intrigue and relationship dynamics as well as economic dynamics since his two roommates, brothers of the local pot distributor, are also involved in its distribution. Although I liked the more responsible teen boy introduced in Coe Booth's earlier Tyrell and felt disheartened by the mistakes Tyrell keeps making in this book, I also found the storyline and characters intriguing and honest. Perhaps that's because Tyrell's heart is usually in the right place. He loves his younger brother and wants the family to be together again, but he also fears his father disappointing them all again, just when they start to trust him again. It's almost comical to watch Tyrell go from girl to girl, almost as though he can't make up his mind about what's good for him. Like so many, he can only see how to meet his immediate needs and is unable to think very far into the future. The book focuses on one period of his life--August 1 through August 23--and more happens around Tyrell during that time than will happen to many during a lifetime. It's hard not to root for Tyrell, but it's also hard to figure out how he will escape a bleak future. The passages involving his mother and father make it easy to see that despite his immaturity, he is more mature than either of them. This is writing at its most honest, and I can't wait to see what's next in store for Tyrell.

Bronxwood Book Review
Coe Booth

Tyrell is a young, black teen living in Bronxwood, New York, with his drug dealer best friend Cal and Cal’s older brother. Although he's struggling to provide for himself, his mother, and get his younger brother, Troy, out of foster care, he’s trying not to be influenced by peer pressure and make an honest living by using his father’s DJ equipment. After his father is released from prison, he wants to take back his responsibility as “man of the house” and Tyrell isn’t having it. Now, in order to prove that he’s “grown” enough to provide for himself and his family, he has to find a way to continue DJing without his father’s equipment. Along with his complicated family life, he also has an interesting love life. He finds himself falling for one of his neighbors, Adonna, but he knows she only goes for big spenders.
I thought Bronxwood was a good book because it told the story of a normal teenager who struggles on a daily basis to take on adult responsibilities. I especially liked how Coe Booth used improper grammar and slang to let readers know that Tyrell is still a teenager. At the beginning of page 99 he starts the chapter by saying he “only got one thing on my mind - the rest of them Cocoa Puffs”. A few pages later, Tyrell describes “The day we was evicted from that apartment,” which tells how harsh his environment and daily struggles are. I think teenagers from all backgrounds will enjoy reading Bronxwood because the book is about a teen so it would be easy for them to understand his struggles, but I would recommend reading Tyrell first because Bronxwood is the sequel. Also, anyone who likes drama, suspense, or the highly acclaimed Bluford High series would like this book. I rate Bronxwood 5 stars.

Bronxwood is one of those books that will keep you awake thinking at night. It is very engaging, but the stuff Tyrell goes through is like real life. It isn’t going to be a fairy tale ending for him, and we know that. He has to hold onto his own and stick to his principles, and that is inspiring.
He is sixteen but has to show people that he is a man. Even as he does this we all know he is but a teen going through that delicate phase in life when you are no longer a kid but not yet independent. But this book is called ‘Bronxwood’ for a reason. It isn’t just about Tyrell, it is about his environment and the way things work there. It gives you a larger picture, but not so large that the components are diluted.
I love the way the author writes the way Tyrell speaks. It makes the narrative more convincing. In the first book you take some time to get used to it, but in this one it is like meeting a friend again. And I wanted to meet Tyrell again, to hear more of his story, in his frank way of putting things. It is very real the way he thinks, and reminds one of the way they have thought when in one of those difficult ‘growing up’ times. All in all this book is awesome and I’m very glad I read it.

Tyrells father just got out of jail and tyrell doesn't really know how to handle that. His little brother Troy is now in foster care and tyrell is having problems with his dad. What I liked in this book was that it was very real, the things that happened in this book can happen to anyone. My favorite character was tyrell because he is a very strong teen who went through many things but is still moving forward. The whole book is very realistic. My favorite parts in the book were when tyrell would go see his little brother who was in foster care, I think that tyrell is a really good brother to Troy. I also felt like if this book had some sense of humor. I would defenitly recommend this book to someone.

Coe Booth strikes again.

BRONXWOOD is a very engaging sequel to TYRELL. Tyrell navigates through incredibly difficult circumstances that no teen should face. He is more mature than his parents and is provided with little support from the adults in his life. My only complaint about this sequel is that Tyrell is a bit of a player, which conflicted with my previous perception of him. I think this is very realistic though--I think I placed him a bit too high on the pedestal.

Read this gritty, compelling novel. You won't regret it.

I wish more authors wrote such books for teens - a REAL urban fiction title geared at the teen market. The dialogue and characters are so believable you fall right in.

This book had lots of dilemmas - should Tyrell hang with Jasmine or keep trying to get with Adonna? Or how about Novisha? More importantly, should he stay in the (admittedly problematic) apartment, or move in this his (also problematic) parents. What should a person do to get money?

I think this book is very good. I have not finished the book yet but from what I have read so far this book explains how difficult life in New York is for some people. The author does very good job of describing the setting of the book. The vocabulary being used when a character is speaking in the book is identical to how people in New York talk. I like to read books like this because i am able to relate to what is happening in the book.

Booth's writing reminds me of S.E. Hinton - well-written stories of kids caught up in street culture, living in poverty, who narrate the ways in which they/their situations are messed up but can't find a way out of it. I was very psyched to see this arc at ALA and it didn't disappoint. But it does hurt to read about Tyrell because he's so real.

Never read TYRELL and it didn't matter (it was a little slow at the front of the story, just picking up who the characters were, but that was so minor). This book was incredibly written, and Ty's got one of the best and most authentic voices I've read in a long time. A killer character with a heart of gold in a world that's anything but that.

Longer review to come.

I did not really like this book it wasn't interesting at all thats one of the reasons why it took me forever to finish the book. it was good because this book is a part 2 of another book and i read this one first so maybe thats why i didnt understand this book. i dont recommend this book for kids under the age of 14 because of the explicit language they use in the book

WOW. Right on par with Tyrell this sequel does not disappoint. Booth writes these books in a way that gives Tyrell more of a voice than just about any literary character I can think of. Bronxwood is a bit of a brutal ride but still manages to give you a glimmer of hope.

Ahhh....Tyrell's back.

As soon as I finished the first book in this series, I knew I had to read the next one, it was inevitable. Tyrell is the kind of character that pulls you to him like a magnet, I couldn't resist.

"Bronxwood" picks up exactly eight months after the events of "Tyrell" left off, with Tyrell's little brother Troy still in foster care. Instead of the roach-infested shelter of the first book, 15-year-old Tyrell is now living with two of his friends in the Bronxwood projects of New York City. His friends support themselves by selling weed to make their living, but Tyrell refuses to join their business. Unfortunately, his family fares no better in this book. Tyrell's father, now out of jail, is more emotionally and physically abusive than before he went in. His mother is still largely absent, taking a backseat now that his father is home taking care of business "like a man." Meanwhile, Tyrell busies himself preparing for future DJ gigs. He juggles the affections of several girls, switching from one to the other whenever the need suits him. He visits his little brother regularly in his foster placement to make sure he's ok. He shows little respect for either his parents, distrusting them and refusing to live in their home, preferring to "be his own man."

Manhood, specifically Black manhood, is a subject that preoccupies this series. What does a child, largely absent of parental guidance, know about the responsibilities of being a man? Coe Booth situates Tyrell in the middle of this question, and even though his poor choices reflect a lack of knowledge on the subject, you still can't help but to love him. She never judges Tyrell--the dialogue, the neighborhood, the plot lines--everything in the book reflect a 15-year-old kid just being who he thinks he should be. It's a simple concept, but I loved every moment of this.

"Bronxwood" focuses on a very brief period in Tyrell's life--less than a month--yet more happens to him than will probably happen to me in an entire lifetime. This book seemed unfinished, but I don't think I wanted a neat little resolution here, Tyrell's got way too much going on for that. I would like to see another book though. I could definitely read abut him for another 400 pages.

Definitely recommend this.

A continuing story on Tyrell's rough, crazy, roller-coaster-like life. Bronxwood written by Coe Booth is the second book to Tyrell, in Bronxwood you get to figure out the relationship Tyrell has with his father once he is out of jail. This adds so many more surprising twists and turns to his life. Tyrell lives in Atlanta working for Regg, a friend of Tyrell's father. Tyrell works as a DJ, throwing parties all around the city and arranging music for everyone to enjoy. Tyrell lives with two Greg and Cal who are two brothers but also, drug dealers. Tyrell's mother typically isn't around and say she is practically worthless along with Tyrell's brother who has been put in foster care. Tyrell was forced to go to a shelter where he meets Jasmyn who soon becomes more than just a friend.
As a reader, I just was angry thinking Tyrell already lives a tough life and it proceeds to get worse when his dad returns from jail. I thought this book moved fairly slow which wasn't pleasing because I wanted to dig deep into Tyrell's life after this first book. The author did a spectacular job with making the readers actually get to know the characters. You got to imagine another person's perspective on their life and could easily make connections with it to yours. At the very moment, I thought Tyrell had found happiness with a girl (which happened a lot) it ended up taking a turn and he would always end up hitting rock bottom. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a tragic, overcoming book that is truly inspirational. This book hints many helpful life lessons you can take away from. For example, one quote that truly stuck with me while reading was "The difference between me and you, is I don't complain about my situation. I handle it"(Booth 276). To any teenager struggling to decide what to read, I believe this is the book for you.

Bronxwood by Coe Booth is a good book. It takes place in Bronxwood, New York. Some of its characters include Tyrell, his brother Troy, his parents, his best friend Cal and his other friend Jasmine. I found this book in the school library and it was a sequel to a book I read in the past.
A boy named Tyrell is living at his best friend Cal’s place. Cal’s older brother Andre is the biggest drug dealer in New York and Cal’s other older brother and himself are both into his business. They try to get Tyrell into it but he does not want to be like his father who has been in and out of prison a lot. When his father is with them life is good but he does things that can get him arrested. When he gets arrested Tyrell is forced to take care of his mother who does not know how to act when her husband is gone and his little brother. Tyrell tries to get with the finest girl in the neighborhood but when she sees him with his ex-girlfriend, she stops feeling him. His ex-girlfriend’s name is Novisha. She lied to him and he broke up with her. After those two girls don’t work out he starts dating his friend Jasmine. At the end of the story Tyrell fights one of his father’s friends for sleeping with his mom and his friend Cal is arrested.

The ending was very good even though it made me mad. My favorite part is when he fights his father’s friend for sleeping with his mom behind his dads back.

This book was very interesting. People who have hard decisions to make and are going through hard times may enjoy this book

so i really loved this book. coe booth did her thing on here its a shame she didnt make a 3rd book to this series because its so many questions i have. tyrell was all about being a man in this one and he literally tried with all his might. he did make some messed up choices in the midst of it all but i feel like everyone wouldve been in the same situation he was in.. he had parents that were never really parents to him. his daddy was too busy trying to get the family back together" and the mama was too busy chasing after the daddy then to be a mother. and the mother lisa deserved everything that she had coming to her let me say that even at the end of the book because she was different type of disrespectful to the family of hers. im happy jasmine and tyrell did end up running off together thats who i really wanted to be together because they understood each other from the get go. i mean they was struggling with each other from the first series of the book. and im happy that tyrell finally did stand up to his daddy at the end of it all he definitely needed to do that. i have questions about cal and what happened with him did greg end up getting locked up? andre? novisha.. is she pregnant ? they ended up on good terms but she did have to tell him something and she never got it out. i wish she wouldve made another one.. this was too good.

Bronxwood is a the best book in my opinion, this book is the sequel of the book Tyrell. In the this book Tyrell have new and past problems in this story. One of the best Urban fiction stories i've read. This not one of her first pieces art, 2 projects before. These projects compared to this is a rose in sunflowers. The characters in this story are the G.O.A.T. You got Tyrell who is trying to get money for himself and trying to help his sibling. My favorite is his Tyrell hs hustle is unmatched to get out. The book is really good written it's unmatched with making you feel like your in the story. I was kinda forced to read this book so I wasn't expecting a whole lot. But, getting into the story I've noticed how much this story is a masterpiece. I would suggest reading this but before you should pick up the original "Tyrell". I say this because you wouldn't get a whole lot of what's going on. This is another reason why I think it's a masterpiece because even tho I didn't read the first one she made this so easy to catch on to the side characters and what's going on.

This book is one of my favorites. I thought the first one was good but this one blew me away. It continues the story of Tyrell and his troubling lifestyle but goes into depth more on the topic of his father and where he has been. It was really heartfelt how attached he was to his brother and how much he wanted for him but things take a sharp turn and Troy (his little brother) ends up in foster care. It is crazy, fun, and wholesome. I think personally that it was a better version of the first one considering it was more family-based/focused. I liked reading about what every character is going through in their life. I would definitely recommend it, especially to the people that read Tyrell and did not really enjoy it.

I really love this book i recommend this book to any one has likes the real definition of urban fiction. I also read tyrell by the same author just more of a detailed story. His life is hard living in Bronxwood because his family keeps fighting and his brother had to be put up for adoption and he doesn't know what to do. I think his main challenge is his dad because he is messing up his life. Tyrell is my favorite character because he fought through his problems. This is not what i expected it was 10 times better.

I was so excited to see how Tyrell was doing, especially now that his dad is about to be released from prison. Although the book started off a bit slow, I was soon devouring all the drama that befell our poor protagonist. The circumstances were different, but it was definitely more of the same: girl problems, family problems, money problems. Poor Ty can't catch a break, and you can tell that he keeps trying to do the right thing--he distances himself from his drug-dealing roommates, and he's doing everything he can to get his little brother back home with his family. A great addition to Ty's story (I wish there was more!)

Bronxwood, Coe Booths sequel to her drama Tyrell was just as exciting and action pact as the first novel. Tyrell's father who had been incarcerated for over a year had been released from prison and though Tyrell had to fend for himself the entire time his father was gone, his father doesn't respect him as his own man. Tyrell is a raw and refreshing story told in a real voice that immediately captures readers' attention.

Cos Boothe wrote the friction book called bronxwood. I would personally give this book 5 stars. She was very thero about how she grew up. The plot of my book was in the Bronx of New York. I didn’t like how the book needed personally I would have liked to know where him and his lady went. I liked how she it so many twist into it and how she put feeling into the character and let you visuallize everything he was going through.

I give both books a 10/10 . Every character in both books have a rough or sad background . Tyrell’s and Troy’s situation, Jasmin’s whole story with her mom, dad and sister is super messed up and Cal with his baby moms and brothers. I wish i can give the four of them a hug. I was somewhat satisfied with the ending of the second book not 100% what i expected but i’m not surprised. I do hope we can get a actual visual of this story and hopefully i can play a character lmaoooo😭
