Fort has been raised according to strict rules; he escaped his dreary childhood and his abusive father in a most disturbing way and married the woman he loved, but lost her long ago in childbirth. After years as a mercenary, he has recently "retired" to the Ten Nations Fair menagerie. He has always had this desire for men, but never given in to it, buried those urges so deep within himself he barely remembered them. Until - yes, until he meets Griff, a tumbler and knife-thrower, a seemingly careless, free spirited man so sexually bold and so charming he breaks right through Fort's fortress walls, straight into his trews - and into his heart.
This is the third book in Rosetti's "Phoenix rising" series, the only m/m after a het romance and a menage, and the author did really well with this. Both Fort and Griff are enticing personalities, both with their flaws and scars. Their relationship, after it got started, was strong and right.
Their beginning, though, was a bit far-fetched, and the author took great pains in making clear both of them actually preferred women, so it was pretty much a gay-for-you story. But Fort threw himself headfirst into Griff once he'd accepted his feelings, which went a long way for him to accept himself, so it all turned out good.
The worldbuilding was amazing. Those ideas - a city built on the leaves of a giant sea plant, flying people, feathered, claw-hoofed camel-like being to ride on, saurier-human hybrids - what an imagination! What's more, all this was largely internally consistent and very well thougt through.
Strongman is a great fantasy, a beautiful romance and a very entertaining read. Recommended.
