A good introductory text on women’s health; divided into 5 parts that theoretically cover all ages and stages in women’s healthcare.

Part 1 is just 2 chapters and covers the female body decade by decade along with how to get the most out of a doctor’s appointment.

Part 2 is an action plan of sorts to promote wellness and youthfulness. These 10 chapters discuss nutrition and fitness, stress, weight, emotions, and other aging related issues.

Part 3 discusses strategies against 6 major health threats. One chapter is allocated to each health threat.

Part 4 covers hormonal wellness from menstruation through menopause in 11 different chapters.

Part 5 is titled Doctors’ Best Symptom Solvers and offers potential solutions for over 75 health conditions including short and long-term solutions, alternative therapies, home remedies, and medical options. This section is not divided into chapters and is about 200 pages long.

I think the best information here is in the longer sections. I most enjoyed Part 2 and learning more about how lifestyle issues and choices can impact our health and wellness. I don’t always do what I should, but reading these better health guidelines is a nice reminder of how and why to stay on track.

It isn’t the ultimate guide as the title suggests, but does serve as a nice beginning point to learn more about good health as a woman and what you can do to achieve better health during the various ages and stages of your lifetime.

Some parts I read in detail, and some I skimmed. This book is jam packed with information, but what I found missing was symptoms. Many conditions were addressed, what the physiology of the condition is, how to treat it both medically and alternatively. But what are the symptoms?

Prevention's Ultimate Guide really does cover a list of more than 100 illnesses or problems a woman might face in a life time. You can read about Alzheimer's Disease, pelvic inflammatory disease, phlebitis, gum disease, or phobia and panic attacks. There are ideas for at home and much admonishment to see the physician. I liked the chapters on general health matters the best.

I laughed when in the Phobia and Panic Attacks section a Dr. Odell's advice was given, as follows; "Nearly everyone gets anxious when people around them are judgmental or dominant. 'Try imagining that the person is a turkey or even the back end end of a horse, Dr. Modell advises, 'You'll be less nervous when you take the situation less seriously and see the person in a different light.'"

Too much information on too many subjects to be carefully checked for accuracy.

For a pop-health guide put out by a magazine, I thought this was an excellent resource. It presents both western medical and alternative therapies for many problems in a well-organized and readable fashion. What I already knew as an MD was confirmed, but I learned a lot, too. It was motivating -- I found I was cooking and exercising more and eating better while reading it, too. I'd recommend this for all my female friends.
