States and Power

پشتِ جلدش نوشته بود: دولت یک ادعاست و همزمان قدرتِ تحققِ این ادعا. بخش نخست پس از مروری بر چگونگی کارکرد مراکز قدرت سیاسی پیش از برآمدن دولتها، اول به نقد و بررسی نظریه های مارکس و وبر می پردازدو سپس نوبت به ارزیابی انتقادی سایر نظریه هایی می رسد که وجه مشترک همگی شان تلاش برای پاسخ دادن به چند پرسش مشترک است: اینکه چرا دولتها تا پیش از قرن شانزدهم نتوانستند قدرت کافی برای اعمال حاکمیت بر مردم و سرزمین هایی که بر آنها ادعای حاکمیت داشته اند گرد آورند؟ و اینکه پس از آن چگونه و به واسطه ی اقدامات کدام گروههای اجتماعی است که دولتها توانسته اند از عهده ی چنین کاری برآید
بنا بر یافته های بخش نخست بخش دوم به بررسی اثر مهم ترین وقایع سیاسی و اقتصادی و اجتماعی جهانی بر قدرت دولتها می پردازد: اینکه انقلابها، استعمارزدایی، جنگها، جهانی شدن اقتصاد، مداخلات تام گرایانه در فرهنگ و اقتصاد و دست آخر مقررات زدایی هایی که به نام نئولیبرالیسم بر بخش مهمی از کشورها حاکم شدند چه تبعاتی برای قدرت دولت و در نتیجه جایگاه آنها در پی داشته اند
